I’m working on a 3x8 flat layout that has so much track and turnouts that it looks like all roadbed. I’ve been laying out roadbed for weeks. I would not have even started if I would have had any idea how tedious it is cutting out all the turnouts and fitting curves. Then it occurred to me that I would have just bought large sheets of cork and glued it down with contact cement or something that I can spread evenly, I could have used a router to cut out the areas between the tracks. I have a device to cut circles and the straight pieces would be easy. The only thing I don’t know it well does cork cut with a router. I think it would look pretty good if it cut clean without chunks breaking off. It’s too late for me now, but I think when I’m done I’m going to try it on some scrap pieces.
I've used cork sheets too. But I use a rasp and sanding paper as well as a chisel to remove the cork sheet in bigger parts. This is the way I worked at my modules and the new yard at Westport, Westport scroll down. Wolfgang
Thanks Wolfgang, I looked at all your photos and you have a very interesting layout. I was thinking more of 3D-Pantograph Router Stencil Tracing Jig like this Milescraft 1298 at Amazon. It probably would not work on large layouts but I think it might work on mine as shown below.
