Maybe I'm the only one that likes the way they look, but I think these two switchers would make good N scale models: Or this one (didn't have a picture, so here's the link): http://yardlimit.railfan.net/railpower/ Anyone got ideas on how to make either of these? How about you guys at Mark4...I know you could do it!
Waaaay too modern for me. However, SW1000/1500's would fit the bill, but I dn't modela yard, so even that doesn't much do me good.
so what the heck is it??? haven't looked up on railpictures.net or anything, but did someone give a gp38 a severe chop job???? beast
Looks like an SW1500 mated with a GP18, and had a child? Or maybe ConCor is building for the prototype world? Certainly is a different appearance from what I'm used to over all the years! Boxcab E50
it would be an unusual addition to a roster, but i think it would be a trick to get it modeled right and have it work very well. getting the drive to the one set of trucks under the cab would be the tricky part...
according to some info. on some pictures posted on railpictures.net, it is a GP20D, frame 996104-3 more info as it is found
Yep it's a GP20D. I like it and think it could be done, but not sure what cab to use. As cheap as the LL GP20's are, it definately is a possible project. The second one is a Green Goat: http://yardlimit.railfan.net/railpower/ This one's really the one I'd like to see in N scale. I've got no idea where to start for that one though.
I've been "researching" those, too. I think they're cool! I know- It has a standing room only cab. That a couple firms in Texas use'em and I think up in Seattle. I picked up a couple LL GP18's from LHS for $10 each and a GP7/9 (?) for $10 also. Gonna bash'em together into a GP18D for my Freelance line. Big thing is a noticed I need a unit with a MUCH lower metal frame. That's where my project has stalled. I was given some ideas on what to use, but the unit is rare. So at the moment I'm keeping hush on it till I get some and try it.
Kinda interesting to see what looks like a yard switcher with dynamic brakes. At least, I assume that's what the blister on top is.
Eagle2- Yes, it is. They have a version with and w/o. They are basically a GP20 cut down and standing room only.
Here is a close up of the other end of one. UP leases them for power on some of the locals around here.
I bet we'll see this design become standard in the very near future as the rainbow spectrum of the various Geep's come due for their next round of refurb. Maybe even the SD40-2's as well, or any spartan cab locomotives that still have useful frames and other parts. I would definitely be up for a some models of the GP15D or GP20D. I am modeling a specific prototype for now but I have visions of a "protolance/freelance" layout and I think these would be cool for a regional or belt line...such as the PTRA in Houston which I think is one of the coolest modern railroads around that nobody hardly ever talks about.
is there anything out there that has a cab close enough to bash??? would the frame on a LL gp20 be able to be chopped down that far?? what about an atlas rs1 frame with a 20 shell??? this is an interesting thread, and it would be an unusual addition to my freelanced road, but from the looks of it, it is probably a bit beyond my skill level..... beast
The frame, trucks and fuel tank are pretty much stock EMD. The LL GP20 would fit the bill for that. The long hood would have to be lowered so the chassis above the motor would have to be machined off. There seems to be plenty of material over the motor to do that. The dynamic blister would have to be then modified and raised and could use a taller fan housing on it. Both the long and short hood ends could pass but really need to be a little more blunt. The angles are not quite so severe. The long hood needs to be longer as the cab seems to be centered over the front truck and an additional high fan added. The front hood is shorter. The cab could be bashed out of the old Con Cor SW shell with the angled roof but would probably be easier to scratch build.
Are there any dimensional drawings available for these in any of the mags? I actually bought a few extra of the LL GP20's with this in mind but it was gonna be one of those "down the road" projects. It would be nice if Diesel Era had an article. I'll have to check. Didn't find drawings, but did come across this which is pretty good info about the market filled by these locomotives... Here are the specs on the EMD version that they call a GP20D . They still use the Catipillar prime mover and all. If you scrole down you will find Kato is somehow involved too. (I believe it is not the same Kato we are familiar with ) Here is another shot of one that UP leased. The cab is actually forward of the truck center. interesting looking engine, that's for sure. i noticed that the linked page didn't show tractive effort, i wonder what kind of adhesion they're getting with their 130 ton engine..... beast
