Ben, you can use a SD70 to pull those cars. UP use the SD70s to pull the office car specials, but it needs a generator car.

I think the MTL F7's would look great, but I don't know if there are many F7's in UP paint around.

An F3 ABA set in Z would really please the new MTL passenger cars.

I am busy chopping the legs off We-Honest people to fill my dome cars! :D Fun Fun Fun! :D

The GP9 and 35 would pull passenger cars as well. I have a lot of photos's of GP9's pulling strings of 4-8 cars for short runs and commuter service. At some point we will have the E8's ready, no date yet.

    An anomaly...

Of course the Great Northern has made things prototypically difficult for us by never running E8s, only E7s. I (and a few other lucky ducks) have an alternative. A GN E8 would be a "fudge". Any guesses who's looking forward to the March releases? ;-)

I am still waiting for mine from the Zscale monster, they should be shipped shortly according to Anthony. So I am excited and waiting....

Here is a picture of my F-7 pulling Marsilis passenger cars. It looks pretty good.

here is another of my Mogul pulling them.

I like both...but you can see I need the baggage and observation cars! :D

A quick look around the 'net, ther may be some of the Last Run SP's & some B units that could stand in for heater cars. There may be others at slow selling dealers not on the 'net or *bay.

Joe: are you coming to Nashville for the WGH show? Should be a great time.
Could be a great show with new items from MTL!?, Bachmann, etc.
Save time for the Grand Ole Opry across the street from the Nashville Convention center.
Anyone with time on a weekday may have time to ride our little commuter train, the Music City Star. Y'all welcome

There is a much greater difference than these pix:

Jeff thanks for the comparison shots. The car detail on the Marsilius look a little better, but then again they do cost a tad more. However, the trucks on the MTL look better. Now I am wondering if the MTL trucks fit on the Marsilius cars. I can't wait to get mine so I can play! ;)

jeff, i think you got the labels switched. the marsailus is on the right, with the black coupler, metal wheels, and attachable end diaphram. i don't have the MTL cars yet, but i do have one of the marsailus.

    David,

I did a comparison and MTL has better detail, though it is 1/8" longer than the Marsilius car. MTL is smooth side and roof and end detail are better as well as the under carriage of MTL has more detail. MTL has truck mounted while Marsilius is body mount.

Both appear to use MTL couplers. MTL costs less also.

Which details are better? From the photos, the Marsillius car looks to be better detailed. The Marsillius car has the side battens, flush windows, correct UP lettering height, separate diaphragm leading to a better looking end, less pronounced molded in grab irons that look more to scale, etc. I can't see the underframe details that well, but MTL does appear to have crisper trucks. Which car has the correct prototype length?

I was excited about the MTL cars, but they look pretty bad in person. The square windows with set-back glass, the lack of side detail, the oversize lettering... they look like the old ConCor smoothside cars in N scale. Hard to believe they are brand new tooling and not something from the 1970s.

I guess we have given the ying and yang of it eh?

Some really need the accurate detail while some are happy to keep the wheels on the track........I'm a track person myself, but I do appreciate as close to realism as possible.

I guess I'm straddling the fence........maybe an uncomfortable position to be in?

These two looks like to different car types to me. Are they supposed to be off the same prototype car? And if so how can they differ so much that they do?

The comparison photos in this post show a MTL Sleeper and a Marsillius Coach. While the window arrangement is different, the car profiles, length and height should be the same.

David, I swapped the manufacturers labels (only the end 3D view was incorrect, all others are correct). Either way you always can tell by the roof colors:

    Dark - Marsilius
    Light - MTL

Loren, make sure it is not a picket fence.

I received my set yesterday, not being a UP fan, it looks good to me. As far as the cars go, I dont think they look so bad. I compare it to to the Marsilius car, and the Marsilius car does have better detail. I wouldnt say much better.Where the MTL beats Marsilius its the underside. It looks busier, but it may need more if its going to be a business car. One detail that realy stand out are the trucks. They really look good. Now all I have to do if find some decals for my CSX business cars. I almost forgot, the MTL car really needs a interior.

The MTL cars also make great core car kits for etched brass carsides, now we just have to find someone to make them for us. :D

Being a basic smooth side, it will be easy to use the laser to cut out a large rectangular opening, a real quick sanding, then attach the new car side. Insert window glazing, and WA-LA! (the US way to say that french word ;) )

I have what proto data I was able to compile on the MTL offering in the just-posted January 2009 UMTRR (see the website). That will provide a start on one of the offerings anyway.
