I look at N Scale Yard Sale. I have never bought anything, but have listed some items recently for fair prices. No takers.

Seems like there are a lot of people charging collector prices for their stuff.

What kind of experience, both as a buyer and seller have other members had?

    Hi Pete,
I have bought a few things from N Scale Yard Sale, but very minimal.
Probably biggest hurdle for me has been the reluctance of sellers to ship to Australia.
I agree with you though that some asking prices are up there

I don't think it's a bad thing though - selling any excess stuff we may have, without having to hand over $$ in fees to eBay

I have a few items that I am planning to list on NSYS, and will be interested to see what happens there

Some prices seem to be up there. On the other hand, some buyers are looking to get something for nothing. This is true for most venues available.

Just joined the group and am looking at the listings. Some people post photos in the photos section, but there is no contact info! I guess we are supposed to try and match up the photos with the listings in the message area?

Kind of a pain if you ask me.

I've delt with it in the past with no luck. Had sent a money order for some items(pre pay pal) And never recived the items. And was never able to get a hold of the seller after.

I have my database on there with stuff that can be bought. I have had some bites, but no serious buyers. It's there, and if and when I get ready to sell stuff from my list I post it hear, and/or ebay anyway. I have also bought a con cor 6 car set of 85'er passenger cars in the Golden State livery there for a decent price. Paid $45 for the un used set of 6 cars. I was pretty happy about that find.

Ya just got to pick and choose..

Not sure if you realized this or not, but there is no easy way to figure out who you are on the group. I found your list, based on your user name here. There is no contact info on the excel file. When I click on your name, I get your yahoo profile, but it has no contact info either.

Hmm.. I dont think it shows email addresses maybe? I think it just has a button to "contact seller" and it will send a message to the email of that seller. Dunno, maybe I need to look at it again. But I have been contacted by people through that site concerning my database..

In the files section, I do not see any contact info for anybody. Except those that specifically put contact info in the file. Same goes for the photos section. Some nice photos, but no way to contact the sellers that I can see.

I list things here first since everyone I've dealt with has been reliable. I don't like epay or any other site. If I don't sell it here, and since I'm not in a hurry to turn anything, I then maybe get a table once a year at the train show and see what happens. I'm going to go to the show anyway, so making some extra bucks while I'm there is a bonus. And I can usually split the cost of the table with another friend so not only does it cost half as much, we watch each others stuff while the other wanders around the show.

I don't list items there, but sometimes I do contact those who place "Wanted" requests. I am in the process of my first purchase at this time. It is going slowly.

It is true that you don't know who is on the other end. I had a buyer for some items who then just disappeared. When I emailed him after about 10 days, he said he no longer had the money and just failed to write back. You never know.

I have bought three or four things there and have had no serious trouble. The worst thing that ever happened to me there was that one seller got a bit testy when my payment did not get from Your Nations Capital to Oklahoma the day before he listed the stuff. Other than that, no trouble; the stuff that I bought arrived in a reasonable amount of time.

I have sold two or three things with no trouble. I have traded three or four things with no trouble.

As others have correctly indicated, some people have a greatly inflated idea of what their stuff is worth. I have seen things listed there for double their list price that go for one fifth of their list price all day long. Hmmmmm--reminds me of many train shows that I have attended over the years.

As others have indicated, you must pick and choose. Most marketplaces seem to work in similar fashion, be they real or virtual; brick and mortar or cyber.

I would say go ahead and try it.

Ive never bought anything over there, well because im not an N scaler lol, but i have listed a few things for sale over there with no luck. I felt my prices were reasonable, but i guess not to anyone else LOL

The HOYARDSALE group is kinda the same way, only there is more of a member list on it, and i have better luck selling on it. I usually end up listing things for less then i would like for them, because it doesnt sell otherwise. Kinda a bummer in this bad economy, everyone wants a brand new locomotive with DCC/SOUND for less then a $75.... lol Good for the buyer if the seller is desperate to agree

I've made four purchases from three different sellers on NSYS. Used USPS money orders each time. All the deals were quick (4 days was the longest) and everything was as represented and the prices were within what I consider the right range for private sellers.

I recently sold a Kato SD45. It sold fast, I even got multiple offers. I got a money order and I shipped the same day.

I've been dealing on NSYS for awhile. No problems, except for the seller that sent somebody else's stuff with the items I'd ordered. I boxed up the items and the seller sent me the postage to ship the items out. We all make mistakes sometimes!
I know about what I'll pay for items and nobody makes me buy anything I don't want. There is an implied trust on the Group, and if I get RIPPED OFF, buying on NSYS, the Group will know about who did the ripping off. I'll be posting the details on NSYS.

I'm a MODEL RAILROADER, not a vendor. I just sell excess items and things that I don't want anymore. If I can get my initial buying price out of an item, GOOD if not, somebody gets a bargain. I'm not out to make a profit, but it has happened. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

NSYS is a lot cheaper and easier than eBay, and I can take checks, money orders, cashier's checks and CASH for payment.

As a FWIW...N Scale yard sale has 1157 members; H0 Yard Sale has 2856 members. It does seem more active but probably because of the larger group. Also, seems like the H0YS often has posts informing members that certain items have been sold.
