i have a atlas gp 7 from '95. and my dad and i installed a decoder in it. i worked, but the motor became realy noisy. i used the digitrax dz123 "before it fried." the dz123 has the quiet drive feature in it. we milled the frame and we kept the motor away from the dremel and the metal scrap and it was in a plastic bag. did any of u have the same problems with a noisy motor after installing a decoder? it was realy quiet before we installed the decoder.

Yes, not on a GP7 but a couple of GP-30's. The problem was with the wires connecting to the motor caps. I found you have to mill the frame out on the inside of each frame half to allow room the wire and an solder on the brush cap. Also, you need to make sure you mill a passage for the lower motor wire in the side of the frame, I just mill a slot in the frame.

I found that even the slightest pressure on the motor cradle will cause it go out of alignment and make a terrible noise.

Before the fix, the GP-30's sounded like coffee grinders. After the additional milling, they are as quite as any of the Kato units I have.
