I was one year old at the time and knew nothing of the Inter City Express but in 1993 The Philadelphia branch of Amtrak hosted the testing of The ver first ICE train. It just so happens the ICE 1 is my favorite train. I wish I could have seen it.
I believe the Amtrak ICE and X2000 evaluations ran between New York and Washington during 1993 and 1994.
I know the locations in the photos, the first is at Frankford Jct where the NEC passes under the el. The second looks like just south of Holme Jct where the Bustleton branch leaves the main. Strange thing is that I don't recall seeing any of the ICE trainsets. I was working in center city at the time and drove up and down I95 everyday along the NEC. Then again I've been increasingly suffering from CRS (can't remember s--t) lately.
Amtrak had one ICE train set, which ran once a day, each way, as trains 112 and 123 during late fall/early winter of '93/'94. It's possible you can find an archived Amtrak schedule for that period, but I don't know where...sorry.
And what is this for combination??? They write: an ICE and a EMD F69PHAC, in Maryland, 1993. According to other pictures, the ICE made a tour around the US. It even went to Phoenix.
Thieu, the Amtrak ICE only had electric power cars, so had to have diesel power for its tour thoughout the US. I was fortunate to see it come through my area sometime during the summer of 1993, prior to its tests on the Northeast Corridor.
Yes, I understand, of course the ICE needs a diesel on non-electrified tracks ;-) But the combination looks so strange, and in that color scheme. And I do not know that EMD engine.
I guess I must have seen a picture of an F69PHAC at some time, but I don't remember it. I'm not interested in modern passenger power, and I can't identify the different models. The nose certainly doesn't look like an EMD should. I just realized that the color scheme is strange. They painted the diesels and the baggage car to match the ICE, not in any normal Amtrak scheme.
Those are the diesels that EMD delivered to the State of California for CALTRANS service, although in the CALTRANS color scheme.
