I removed the windows to paint and it took me so long that I don’t remember where they may be. I got real excited to see Campp selling a LL GP20 shell, but then was disappointed when I discovered there was no glass. I’ve been searching everywhere for LL parts and I got to hand it to Bachmann because they always have parts. I also heard that Walthers bought Life-like and they are selling GP20s right now. Does that mean that the Walthers GP20 parts would fit LL GP20? Anyway I thought I saw a thread once about making windows, but I can’t find it.
Johnny-You can use Micro Kristal Klear to form the windows. It's a milky liquid that dries very clear (like the name implies). It's easy to use and looks really good when dry. I've used it make the windows on a GP18, F7's and E8's with excellent results.
Thanks, it sounds interesting, but I can’t figure out how it will work to form a window without a mold. I did a search in YouTube but could only find it used as a glue for clear plastic parts. Is there a demonstration or instructions someplace?
I found this http://www.modelgeeks.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/rail/6856/How-To-Make-Window-Glazing And it mentions that if it gets wet it will turn white. I don’t know if there’s is something to protect it afterwards or not.
Models do not normally get wet after they are assembled. If Kristal Klear happens to get wet after it has fully set up, it will simply dry up again. The "secret" to using Kristal Klear as window glazing is to use as little of it as possible. You get a drop of it on a toothpick, then touch the toothpick all around the window frame, then draw the toothpick away from frame contact and a web starts to form. If you do not have enough Kristal Klear on the toothpick, the web will never start to form. If you have a lot, the blob on the end of the toothpick is large and the web forms easily - but the end result is a "window" that does not look as good as it could.
Thanks I’m going to order some Micro Kristal Klear and maybe a couple of bottles just in case. I guess even if I can’t get it to work right I can use it to glue in clear plastic from packaging. When I dissembled the GP20 I laid it all out and took photos of everything so I wouldn’t forget anything. I also took apart the chassis because I sent the frame out for machining to make room for a decoder. I just looked at the photos and the windows weren’t there and then I remembered asking about how to remove them. I think the very first thing I did was remove the windows. I’m hoping that I put them in a something and they are still around.
