Got a freind from Great britain that will make the jump over the Atlantic pond over the summer. Think he and his family are staying in Kissimmee. He asked if I knew of any good shops in the area.

How would I know? I haven't live in FLA for almost 30 years! But I figure some of YOU would know.

Last time I lived in Florida I wasn't even thinkin' about trains, except maybe how to hop a freight back to Texas...

    Any idea / experiences?

    thanx,

Two - Colonial Photo & Hobby on N. Mills near downtown Orlando, a half block off Colonial Drive, not far East from I-4, and Train Depot in Winter Park, on Fairbanks Ave. just East of I-4. No discounts at either though. My daughter lives in Leesburg, about 40 miles Northwest of Orlando, and I try to visit both shops when I'm down there.

I'll second Gregg's recommendations. Once they have you on their radar you'll get a discount, but even without that they are great shops. Colonial Photo & Hobby is the larger shop and will have a little of just about everything. Train Depot is a bit smaller, but has nice folks and is all trains. I frequent and recommend both.

I always stop by Train Depot and Colonial Photo & Hobby when I go to Orlando, which is on a fairly regular basis.

If he's into driving on the wrong side of the road (for him), we have 8 or 9 decent hobby shops in the greater Ocala area, which is about 80 miles north of DisneyWorld straight up US 27. They all sell N scale stuff, too.

If he's interested, put him in touch with me via email and I'll give him directions to all the retailers.

    Cam,

I know the ocala area (well I did) I lived not too far from there...Little town called Jacksonville...A long time ago.

    But I'll ask him.

    Thanks.

    Tom:

Jacksonville has really changed from a "little town" status.

PSG - It was never a little town...not while I was there. (I was being face...facesou...faceso. Oh heck! Maybe a little sarcastic) I still have relatives there. May be making my way over thataway this summer. Something about a 30 year reunion. Duval county was the largest county in the US at one time. Dunno if that's still true...But even then, it was BIG!

Thirty years ago, there was no air conditioning per se in Florida.

That statistic is a bit dated. It was 1976 in Florida 30 years ago, and I distinctly remember air conditioning [IMG] [IMG] How else could my Dad have complained about air conditioning the entire neighborhood? :D

Sounds like my Dad when we lived in Miami TX except we'd AC the whole lower half of Roberts County.

I remember we had AC then as well...The first house Mom and Dad bought in '72 or '73 had window units, though. ANd just in their bedroom and the main living areas. If you were a kid....SWEAT City...

I knew you'd like the Train Depot off the I-4. Mike and his wife run a nice shop.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to the SkyCraft Surplus store a block or so toward I-4 from the Train Depot. It is a fascinating place where you will waste far too much time and where you will buy things you didn't know you needed. You have been warned.
