I have recently moved to upstate NY from St. Louis...I was wondering if there ae any hobby shops worth visiting in the area...NY, Vermont,New Hampshire, Quebec, etc...
A look at the local phone book shows nothing.

Don't know how far you are from the Boston, Mass area, but this (N-scale only) shop in Sudbury, Mass was great. Visited couple of years ago.

    Ski,

You might want to start here:
    NMRA
This site list hobby shops by state. Not all of them are there, but it is a good start.

In Maine there is a shop call Train and Trooper . I ordered from them through the mail and bought from them at the large Springfield MA show.

In New Hampshire there is a place called Neals N Gauge. Nice shop, all N Scale. I think they have a website, but I don't remember it off hand. It is in the lower part of the state (near the popular beaches).

In Warren MA (near Sturbride) there is a shop called Tuckers. It is full of N Scale, HO Scale, books and videos. A really nice store to visit. The number is 413-436-5318. It is located at 29 Bacon Street, Warren MA 01083. I go there about once a month and always end up buying stuff.

Another place to search for trains stores is Railserve . Sometimes you can find a place just by looking through there.

You can do a search by state and area here
    Good luck.

Ken's Trains in Sudbry MA is a great store. Check his hours in MR because he is not open all day nor every day. Train and Trooper is located in Phillips Maine, north west of Farmington and is quite a distance from Portland. Matt moved up there from Yarmouth a few years ago.

    Neal's N-Gauging Trains
86 Tide Mill Rd, Hampton, NH 03842

I was once e-mailed directions to the store. I'm pretty sure this assumes you are coming from the north:

"To get to Neal's I always take 95 south, get off exit 2 in New Hampshire and then take 101 east towards Hampton Beach. You will take a left at a stoplight on to Landing Road, after that you go somewhere around a half mile (could be more or less) and Tide Mill Road is on the right, it is a residential road that winds through the marshes towards the public works, Neal's is in a cluster of industrial type buildings on the left about 2/3 of a mile in. He has a wonderful selection of detail parts, Craftsman type and Walthers kits as well as a good slection of rolling stock. He has most everything the N Scale architect has offered over the last several years. "

I have never been there nor have ordered from him, but have heard good things about him.

    Try this ... Neal's N-Gauging Trains

I met Neal at his booth at the GATS Mobile, AL show last month. He's a very likeable, enthusiastic person ... persuasive too. [IMG] I imagine it would be fun to shop in his store, although you might want to call first to see when he is in town. He also advertises in N-Scale magazine.

Upstate NY is a very big area. Depending on where you are from will depend on what you conisder to be "upstate." I am currently in Troy, which is upstate if you are from the city. People who live out by Rochester or up by Plattsburgh consider themselves upstate, but not Troy.

I'm familiar with all the shops in the Capital Region of NY, and none of them specialize in N-scale. As for north eastern MA, which is where my hometown is, Neal's and Ken's shop are very good from what I have heard (never visited either even though Neal's is less than 20 minutes from my house). Also, there is Charles Ro in Malden, probably one of the biggest retailers this side of the Mississippi. He specializes in large scale, but has quite a selection of N and HO at good prices.
