I would like to build a 4 X 4 N-scale layout and am wondering if there are any good plans out there? I would like a little switching, a decent mainline length (enough to run a 2 loco 16 car coal train). I would prefer to use Kato Unitrack, but not necessary. Thanks in advance.

    Dave,

A couple of links for you to try - many plans on these two sites are more rectangular than 4x4, but broadening the curves or adding a straight section or two could make several of these plans fit in your space.

Kato web page (click unitrack and go to n trackplans) www.katousa.com

    Mike's small trackplans page

    Dave-

There are many. There is a book out - 100 Track Plans. Also the Atlas Book #7 Level 2 Book and there is a site that has small track plans, the name and URL of which escapes me. Unitrack is the safest and least stressful way to go.

I have a few suggestions, though and a some questions.

Is 4'x4' an absolute? Is there a possibility of using a length of wall in the train area, instead?
Are you even remotely contemplating expansion when you conclude this project? If so, you may need to modify design to allow for easy attachment to next area.

Have you tried a program like XTrakCad to lay down some of your thoughts? Or even hand draw same and post here?

    Dave:

The Kato USA website above has many trackplans you can use or modify for a 4x4" layout. They also give you the exact number of track pieces you need for each layout.

    Have fun. [IMG]
