[SUP]I ordered a gp38 that I'm going to paint in dt&i. I grew up about 10 minutes from Ironton (the I in dt&i) so I have a strong local connection to that railroad. I have seen a few models in Z but who models it?[/SUP]
Oh I am a fan as I grew up next to the NYC/PennCentral/Conrail/NS tracks and the GT which seemed to run DTI locos for a while. I think the GT absorbed part of it I could be wrong. Always loved the orange colors! My grandmother lived on Walnut street in South Bend which is right between the two main lines and I used to watch trains all day. In fact there were other railroads NJII and NYC kankakee line that are now gone as well. It was a neat place where we were in a triangle of trains.
Oh very cool. A lot of people haven't heard of it before. There is still a dt&i caboose down by the flood wall in ironton on display. You're right. Dt&i became gt which I believe became conrail.
Well, I model D&RGW now, but back in 1972 I picked up my first copy of Model Railroader June or July, which showed Jim Hediger's DT&I / OS. It showed these nice red engines with red / yellow cabeese on a great looking layout. This got me infected with the US railroad's. ....I took me until 2006 to start modeling in Z scale US style.
Yes I am! I have been a fan of the regional roads for some time with P&LE and DT&I being a focus. I went to college in Ohio and remember seeing the DT&I locos running. The did stand out! I have definitely been toying with the idea of a US layout the represents ares in PA, OH and the great lakes region. The first special car set we produced with Micro-Trains was a two-pack of DT&I 50' boxcars! The colors and logos came from a good bit of research I did on the DT&I. One car was used to carry auto parts, and the other canned good. I still have a few of these sets available if anyone is interested. I have not added a DT&I loco to my roster yet. But I know of a few Z scalers who have done so. The GP38 is a great choice. Let us know how it turns out. Rob
Very cool Rob! I didn't know you had any dt&i cars. I will have to order a set next week. Thats what I'm doing with my layout is Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia areas. My layout is called the Appalachiam model railroad. I will focus on steam. The dt&i ran a few mikados so look for a Azl repaint in the future along with a chessie steam special. Funding is the biggest set back! Lol I really enjoy painting an decaling these trains into lesser made road names that fit my era of modeling.
DT&I was merged into the Grand Trunk, as well as was the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line. GT was the US subsidiary of CN. CN has since taken GT fully under the umbrella.
Excellent, show us what you make with them! I sure wish he had more of a variety, like some Milwaukee Road...
It needs a dull coat but it works. The orange might be on the bright side but it's close enough for me. View attachment 64812 View attachment 64811
Thanks! I've actually stripped it back down and I'm redoing it. I'm going to make it prototypical and remove the dynamic brakes and add a bell to the nose.
I ordered a new set of decals. I'll start on it tonight or tomorrow. I have a few things to think about on how I should do it.
I got rid of the dynamic brakes. Literally took less than a minute. I applied a coat of primer to see what areas need cleaned up and worked a little more. I think it turned out nice.
Bells installed. A little more sanding and it'll be ready. I'm going to add the window shades on the side too.
I used a dremel with a sanding disc to remove the bulk. Gave it a coat of primer and then hand sanded with some 220 grit.
