In my quest to find a speaker that would fit in an Atlas GP9 and still sound decent, I did another speaker test. Video should be self-explanatory.

John, thanks for the posting. My opinion is the dumbo is the best. If small size is needed, then I would think the fox would be the choice.

What do you use to put a load on the decoder. I have tried a 1K resistor and it did not work? ?

The fox does seem to give a nice sound for the size. Did you make the enclosure for it?

    Hi Carl.

I don't use any load on the TSU. I program it using ops mode (programming on the main), so it doesn't need a load for that.

Yes, I made the enclosure from .020 styrene and gel CA cement. The enclosure is 6mm deep overall; the speaker might perform better with a slightly larger enclosure, but this is as big as I could make it and still fit it inside a GP9 shell (with some modification to the rear part of the frame).

I'm pretty sure the Fox will be the speaker I'll use in diesel installs. Now the question is what sound decoder to use - it needs to be no larger than 10mm wide; the ESU LokSound micro select is a hair over 10mm; the MRC "general" diesel decoder is 27mm long by 9mm wide, which should fit, but I'm a little leery of MRC's stuff. CT Elektronik from Austria does a "micro" sound decoder, but they don't have any sound files for US diesels (great sounding German/Austrian stuff, though!). I think I might try an ESU or MRC 1959 and see how they work.

The Loksound micro select has fantastic motor control, I used one in my 44 tonner install and it runs incredibly slow. The only things I didn't like were the lack of a dedicated button for brake squeal sound, and all but the wabco A2 horn sounds were disappointing. It just so happened that was exactly the horn I needed for that project, so I was satisfied. For what it's worth, I can confirm that the size that Loksound lists for the micro is exactly what you get, the heat shrink enclusure thickness is included in the size.
