Another in my series of comparisons of small speakers we might be able to use in N scale, this time between a Knowles Fox (9mm X 16mm) and a Star Micronics SCP-08B (8mm x 12mm), each in a 6mm deep enclosure made from .020 styrene. I'm pretty sure the Star Micronics speaker is the same one sold as the Zimo 8mm x 12mm "sugar cube" with a pre-made enclosure. Well I guess I have to admit that I did not hear much of a difference. To me, they both sounded good. So I guess it will be which ever is the smaller unit or the less expensive unit.
I thought the Knowles Fox had less overall distortion, particularly at Run 8. But by the time you turn the volume down to something reasonable for a home layout, I doubt you'd hear any difference. The Star Micronics is smaller, but I'm still looking for a reliable source. I bought a few from Newark Electonics, but I think they are now out of stock there. John C.
Thanks for the comparison. I thought the Knowles had a better quality horn sound. I am listening to this on my computer with Bose speakers so slightly enhanced quality over standard computer speakers.
