I started another cab for an SP switcher kitbash. Not sure if this will go on another SW1500 or an MP15AC this time. I have the parts for another SW1500 but an MP15AC would be cool too! Whatcha think I should do? If I did an MP15AC, I woul just use a drive from a DC unit as I believe the truck centers are only 6" off (which is close enough, in my opinion). I took a different approach with the SP light package install this time. After studying numerous photos of SW1500's and MP15AC & DC units, it appears that the visor over the lights in the nose was also used on the cab as seen here..... http://espee.railfan.net/picindex/mp15ac_walkaround/rs_mp15ac-y.html So, I did the same and cut the front visor (and marker light housings) off a scrap Atlas MP15DC shell and spliced it into position on the cab. Opinions welcome.
Russ, to me it looks kinda thick. Instead of the plastic, could you take a scrap piece of etched metal and make the visor? attach it to the cab and have it hang over the lights like in the proto photo you included? I did this once on a ATSF GP20 that has a shield over the top of the lights. Maybe I'm all wrong though, I haven't looked at alot of SP photos like you have. Can you post up a link to a photo of the lights area of the cab? Mike
Mike- I know what you mean, but the the thickness isn't really all that noticeable on the finished model, especially when you look without magnification or enlargement. Here's the same part on the nose of my SW1500... Thanks for the feedback! Russ
Russ, gotcha! Yeah, it does look normal on your finished model. I also took a look at some proto photos and now see what you are doing. Cool! I'll vote for a MP15AC also. Might as well, since you already got the SW1500 under your belt Mike
Whichever one you do I am sure it will be another winner! Looking forward to following this thread too.
I suggest the MP15AC as well. Then you would have a SP staple, and you would probably have the only N scale one. It would make a great work companion to your 1500.
Lookin' good, Steve! Is the radiator section off an Atlas GP15-1? That's the approach I was planning on taking. Russ
Yes, it's from the GP15-1. The radiators are perfect. The air intakes come out slightly small, but I think they will look OK.
I thought about using the air intake grills from the SD40T-2or the SD45T-2,wouldn't that work too.Look forward to the progress on your kit bash.
Any update on the kit bash of the MP15AC that you guys are doing? Russ and Steve? it doesn't look like an MP15AC in N Scale will be announced any time soon. They would sell well.
No progress on mine. Been taking a break from the hobby as of late. I'm also still torn between doing an MP15AC or another SW1500. Russ
