I completed my caboose project and am ready to paint the SD-45's in the black widow scheme.
So while thinking it out I said heck I may as well paint a 3rd unit as well.

    So here is what I am shooting for with the caveat that I am not painting an SD-45 ;

I have no idea who created this scheme but I hope they have no problem with me using it

I am painting it on an Atlas SD60-M and here it is with the first airbrushing. In a couple of days, I will mask off and spray the black. After that cures for 2-3 days I will spray with Krylon clear gloss and then apply the orange stripes, numbers and road name ( I am going to use Cotton Belt) as they are all decals. Trucks will be silver. I am contemplating step lights and ditch lights. No sound, I am through screwing with sound so I'll use a good LokPilot or Zimo.

Actually this design sort of resembles the KATO 1996?

WHY ? Just to be different ! Will do updates if anyone is interested.

Be safe, be well, have a Happy Thanksgiving,
    Carl

Well I have already hit a snag, not unsurmountable though. I need a set of contact strips for the Atlas SD60M chassis. I checked the Atlas parts pages and they have none, I checked the "soo-much-stuff" site, nothing there. Does anyone know of another loco's strips that may fit even KATO, actually I've read that KATO's do not corrode as fast as Atlas.

    Any suggestions welcome,
    Carl

You might want to try emailing the Atlas parts dept. and ask about them. It's possible they just inadvertently omitted them after a relatively-recent update of parts listings and pics.

I did that and the only positive was that they replied the very next morning. they said " unfortunately no we do not have and will not get anymore of those since the upgrade of adding wires for the sound SD60's". Adding wires was an upgrade? Wasn't that a step back into the past?

Umm, not to be picky, but isn't that a "Daylight" scheme, not "Black Widow"?

Thanks Rick for looking but I never said this was to be a black widow scheme. I painted the silver on the two SD-40's that I am painting in black widow, for another project, while painting this Daylight scheme at the same time. Maybe too many irons in one fire? ?

I solved the pickup strip issue by ordering some SD-70ACe strips from KTO along with several other items.

    Happy T-Day

you could find some copper sheet and pound the sheet with a hammer then cut your own strips......

Here is the 2nd color added to my Cotton Belt SD-60M in the Daylight colors.
The other2 are BW SD-40's for another project.

Here is the SD-60m with masking off and I laid the orange stripe on to get an idea for using the wide or narrow decal strip. This is the wider and I am going to use it.

Next up will be to gloss coat this glued together shell, apply decals, then dull coat the whole thing. The trucks, I painted silver and they are ready to go, could not believe the crap I got out of gears and pickup cups, wow.

    Be well,
    Carl

So, I could not resist and be patient. Here is the front, so while the decal setting solution is tightening up I shot this. I think it will be OK after trimming some of the bottom of the decal and # boards area :

My decals are very old prints so I sealed them and the shell with gloss coat. Don't know what happened but the decals crinkled in some places. I think the Micro Sol (I hope) will straighten them out.

    Be well,
    Carl

Shot of conductor's side, I will remove the screwy white stripes and put down new ones. A lot to do to dress it out :

But heck, I am having fun !

    It is finished today :

That is finished for this paint scheme. I was not at all happy with the orange stripe as it crinkled when sealed, I got the cab # on crooked. Just not happy with the result at that point so I stripped it off and will re-paint, not sure what color scheme, however. Probably a variant of the, my fav, black widow. That's pretty easy, just paint black/silver/red and add decals. I guess I am admitting to myself that my hands/fingers will not do justice to a complex scheme. It is a b**ch to get old! ! !

    Later, be cautious, be well,
    Carl

Oh for sure, be good as the jolly ole fat man is coming!

A long time ago I had issues with solvaset with decals. Now just use Microscale Micro Set and Micro Sol.
