Here is my latest -ATSF Northern 3771. Of course, built from my northern mold and a kato GS4. Next we will move to Northern Pacific, how about an A4 Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Somehow I knew you would. I was about to call you tonight to check on a different number. But started looking at the decal sheet and decided that 3771 was easer and that the two 3771's would Likely never meet, it's for Gordon Bliss. Thanks
This would be a Lima or Alco product? You did a fantastic job on her. The one I most want to see in N is a Baldwin M64 D&RGW 1700-class. (http://www.steamlocomotive.com/northern/?page=drgw) I wonder how the specs compare? Here's an Otto Perry photo (Denver Public Library Western History Collection) of the class engine, at Minturn, CO:
Hi Jason, looking nice! If you consider a NP engine, how about the A1, the former "Timken"? Though it is lacking some of the identifying features of late NP Northerns (like the 7-axle centipede tender and the closed cabs of the A4 and A5) it is a beautiful engine! And it can correctly be used on a lot of different layouts, as it ran on the New York Central, Pennsylvania, C&O, Lackawanna, New Haven, Lehigh Valley, Nickel Plate, Missouri Pacific, Burlington and finally the NP. And maybe once you have build a dozen or so I can persuade you to sell one to Germany.... :tb-biggrin: Here is a picture, again from the excellent Ron Nixon collection at the Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman, Montana: Cheers Dirk
In all honesty, id say for the D&RGW and NP northerns that have normal spoked drivers, starting with a Bmann 4-8-2 heavy mountain would be a good starting point. After all, like on the Santa Fe, the 4-8-4 was originally called a heavy mountain with and adapted 2 axle trailing truck. Thats where the birthed from to begin with so it would be the perfect starting point for models of that sort.
Bremner, I think I was thinking the SP GS-4 was a Lima locomotive. As far as a kitbashed D&RGW 4-8-4, it would be difficult. The drivers are smaller on the Grande engine (73" vs 80"), wheelbase shorter, etc. Not sure how I'd go about it.
Hemi, the GS4 is a Lima, the AT&SF's (which I thought that you were asking about) is a Baldwin. Not sure about the D&RGW
Actually, a better starting point for the D&RGW northern would be an CC S2 4-8-4 chassis. I believe those are VERY close if not spot on for a 73" driver.
Nice loco. May I suggest the NP A-3. Two roads used it both NP and SP&S and there is still one around running. That be the SP&S 700 although an oil burner was out of the same order that the NP placed for thier A-3. And there are a lot of photos available of the 700.
Just wait and see whats been brewing in jason and I's heads after the 2-10-2 comes out from Bmann. You all will be extremely surprised although my buddy rodney and i have already built a few with decent success but this 10 coupled chassis will make it soooooooo easy! Its even better when my master shell should be getting casts by jason shortly!!!!
