I keep getting lucky, catching these rare daylight westbound freight movements up a commuter line. This long UP TOFC train, lead by an unpatched SP 8625, at CP Soledad (the former SP Saugus Line), now Metrolink Valley Line. Taken yesterday around noontime.
SP8628. What is it? Couldn't be an SD40? I thought they were all gone. I guess I am assuming it is a six axle.
Just looked at George Elwood's website. Looks like it is an SD40M-2, a rebuilt from the Idaho guys (can't remember the company right now). (Edit: Morrison-Knudsen in Boise) They had several types of car bodies for the SD40M series. SP did not have any SD40-2s that they purchased, but they may have had one in the SD40M series. BTW, Espee did have SD39-2s. They looked about the same (frame length), but only two fans on the rear, I think. I caught a Daylight TOFC train going through Burbank on my way to Tehachapi yesterday. Couldn't get a shot of it while I was driving though. I also saw two tunnel motors. One a Leaser on a BNSF train. I didn't even realize what it was till it was almost past, so I'm hoping the quick shot works out. The other was a UP patchjob In Mojave. Again, I was on my way home and not stopping, so I didn't get a picture.
