Hello All, I'm pretty new to this N scale sensation and virginal to this forum, so please be gentle. I just wanted to introduce myself and say Hello. I live on the South Coast of New South Wales in Australia and have most of the infrastructure needed to build my 1st ever layout. Throughout my entire 56 years, this is something I have always wanted to do and it is now happening. I'm pretty excited about it. I have an area of 10' x 10' put aside for the layout and another area the same size for my work and storage area. I plan on going the DCC route and have identified the NCE system as being best for me (and the brand new grandson). I'll be modelling a layout based loosely on the WP Feather River Route of late 40's & early 50's. However, the nearest group/club to me is 3 hours away so I'm flying blind. Whenever I start a project I usually have everything sorted out in my tiny brain before I get into it, however with this, I can see I'll be asking lots of questions down the track. Heres hoping you dont mind answering them. Likewise, I look forward to contributing where I can too. Rob.
Rob, Welcome to trainboard, great to have another Aussie on board actually there are quite a few Aussie N scalers here. I'm not to far away in Campbelltown, you can see photos of my layout on my trainboard blog or my railimages albums BTW as a trainboard member you are entitled to a railimages album and a blog to record your progress. Look forward to seeing more of your posts and your progress. Oh we also have a "how to" forum that has lots of great articles.
Thanks for the warm welcome My thanks go to, Darren, Russell, Paul and Mike for the warm welcome. I can see that I'm going to enjoy myself here.:tb-biggrin:
Rob, There are always plenty of members here to help you. I would suggest you open a thread in the layout design forum to start kicking around ideas on your layout design. There are also good experts on the DCC forum to assist you with any queries on the black art
Welcome to TrainBoard! Ask. Doing so may save you time, money and frustration. Be sure to keep us posted on your progess. It's always fun to follow along. Boxcab E50
Welcome aboard Rob. We do have a quite infrequent member modelling the same area but in the late 60's who lives in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. I can put you in touch with him for local answers to the more specific questions you may have. Otherwise, there are a couple of WP fans on TB who will be more than happy to help. As Paul said, there is a broad range of DCC experience on the board as well, and I have a NCE PowerCab system myself.
Thanks also To BoxcabE50 and Gary for your welcome. Gary, you have helped me out in the past with a couple of e-mail messages via the N scale Yahoo group. You may remember, at that time I was just about to leave on an around the world trip in an attempt to blow all of my wifes long service leave money and had asked about which DCC outfit to buy while I was away. You gave me a comprehensive rundown on the NCE system which helped greatly in my decision. Because all of the 5 major manufacturers systems are so good, choosing the right one for my own use was probably the hardest decision I have had to make so far. Your informative messages helped me greatly in that decision making process. Thanks.
Welcome Rob! I got back into model railroading a little over a year ago and at the time switched from HO to N. There are lots of great resources here in the form of the people and the old threads (which are searchable). There are also quite a few Aussies, and it seems a large percentage are also from New South Wales so you're in good company. This board has been a great help to me, kind of like being in a second club. Adam
Howdy from the other side of the planet!! Is it true trains run in the opposite direction down under? Is that a really silly question? Anyway, welcome aboard!!
Hello Rob, New South Wales, been there a half a dozen times, great place! better yet, great people! I see your cursed with the same amount of room I have for a layout, 10 by 10. Wonderful isn't it? Should of bought a house with a basement, hard to find in Alaska. Welcome aboard mate. Goodday! Rob Prototrack, Alaska
You guys are great. Thank you Tony, Rob, John W, Gary, oldrk, and Adam for also welcoming me here. old rk, Everything here is different, bath and toilet water spins the opposite direction as do cyclones and instead of being on the right side, cars are driven on the correct side of the road. If it wasnt for the fact we magnetize the rails here our trains would fall into space. Rob de Rebel. Considering there are so many N scale layouts on doors, I'd have thought that 10' x10' was a pretty decent size for N. If I get cramped for space I could always get rid of my vintage cars and tractors and expand the layout into the 40' x 35' space that they occupy. There arent too many basements in Oz either. To answer your question Gary, The trip was amazing. There were many highlights such as doing a Trans-Atlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2. However, the one thing that would be of interest here was our trip across the USofA by rail. We left NY and travelled up the Hudson to Niagara, then to Detroit (where I did a Henry Ford pilgrimage), then to Chicago where we joined the California Zephyr (for the most awsome ride of our lives) to San Francisco via Yosemite. We enjoyed it so much that we're planning another rail holiday in the US. This time we'll take the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago, then to Philly (Sandy has family there), then New Orleans and the final step to LA. This is planned for Sept/October '09. But theres lots of modelling to be done between then and now. Once again fella's, thanks for the welcome. :tb-biggrin:
welcome Rob - it's good to have another one from the West Island here on TB... ! (steve w. North Island)
Welcome to Trainboard Rob! Lots of nice folks here always ready to help or just share a laugh. Looking forward to seeing your layout progress. Jim
