Over last winter I built a small coal loader and posted the progress of the project here on Trainboard, http://www.trainboard.com/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/8/t/001156.html . I had lots of fun building and sharing the project here. All of the nice replies and emails I got help encourage me to keep building so I had something new to post about every week. I was thinking about starting another post on my new project, a large coal mine tipple and coke oven battery. The mine tipple will be of an older wood frame with metal siding, the coke ovens will be a 50's era concrete and brick design with a more modern steel coke crusher added onto the older tipple. The mine will receive coal from a drift mine (out of sight) and a truck dump pit (modeled). The whole model will be around 8' long and everything will have to be scratchbuilt. Here is the future site of the mine. The photo shows a cardboard mockup of what the tipple will look like. The coke ovens will be behind the tipple building between the two spur tracks and the backdrop. This photo shows that I have the area in plaster and I am ready to build the structures. The pink foam shows the mockup for where the coke ovens will be located. What do you think?
Ooooh yeah, been waiting for another of your topics Coaltrain, let the learning begin! Already you have laid a heap of plaster, comparing top & bottom photo's,also is that hand laid track & points I spy?
Coaltrain I for one would be very interested in the progress of your project, given my RR's coal grounding. I'll be watching this thread with interest! Cheers
That is a big project! How long is it likely to take you? I look forward to regular progress reports/pictures
Ok, I'll do it. Thanks everyone. How long will it take? I'm not sure. I have a good start on the hard stuff and I am heading to the store to pick up some supplies. I will start a new post to kick off the project and post some pictures. I have a question, is it possible to scan an image out of a book and post it to show a prototype picture of what I am building? I'm guessing I can't but maybe there is ways to do it.
Coal, theres no reason why not...its the same as posting any pic in here. Just link to where you've published the pic on the web (ie railimages) and it'll show. 8'....this is gonna be good... I've got lots of free space on my planned layout at this stage so something like this could fit in nicely.
What I meant was, is it legal to post someone else’s photo that was scanned from a book. As far the 8' length, that is going to be length of the scene, not the mine building, just in case someone was mislead.
CoalTrain, I think as long as you give the book or photgrapher credit you should have no problem! Oh ya another thing, Just make sure it has no UP logo on it!!!
Coaltrain I deal with copyright issues quite often with my own website, dealing with both images and articles. The majority of people that have brought anything copyright to my attention have asked that they be attributed in some way with the image or article - only a couple of bull headed ones wanted it removed. So I would say, as Andy has said, just give the originator of the shots credit for them and you should be right. Other than that you could contact them by email to get their approval. Cheers
