Looking down the city boards, the cement plant is in position (still to be finished - been in this state for about a year!), there will be another building to the left of it with a loading track going into it. The structure at the far end is a freightcar repair shop.
At the end of the board behind the repair shop, more roads are to be made. A Denny's Restaurant and a gas station are shown. A hotel will be opposite Denny's, and a station will be nearest the camera to the right of the road, so my Budd RDC has somewhere to pick up passengers
I picked up this kit off ebay. It will fill the area next to the road opposite the buildings in the corner.
The staging yard is hidden from view by strips of corrugated cardboard painted pale blue/green. Next Woodland Scenics Polyfiber was stretched thinly and glued to it with pva wood glue. Wood glue was brushed lightly over the polyfiber and ground fom pressed and blown onto it to give a background to the trees which are "planted" in front of the backscene
Some of the foreground trees, with the backscene behind. Much more work needs to be done to detail the area and improve the look of the foliage Before and after. On the left a tree as purchased, I think the plant is called sea foam, but may also have other names. On the right the tree has been rolled in dilute wood glue then in a box of mixed ground foam to add the foliage. This gives a nice "see-through" effect
On the part of the backscene which is a bit too close to the tracks for a sufficient depth of foliage I cut away the card and am adding an industrial building. Instead of just doing a building flat, I decided to take it all the way over the staging yard tracks, and cut away to allow passage of freightcars. From normal viewing angles just the end and foof can be seen. The basic structure of the building was made with oddments of thin white faced chipboard I had to hand, and corrugated cardboard for the foof. The walls will be covered with siding, and the roof with suitable roofing material Showing how it straddles the tracks
Wow, Alan! I really need to get back into my trainroom... But it's so hot up there..... You really have a great-looking layout there! Keep up the great work!!
Hemi- Is the room insulated? If so, you might try some light colored curtains in any windows that get sun. Keep them closed during daytime. These will reflect some heat. Open windows ASAP in evenings when air cools. Also, consider an inexpensive room (window mounted) air conditioner. This time of year, you might find a sale, and get a good deal. Boxcab E50
The roomis insulated but this tyupeof house is notorious for making the upper floor stay HOT, while the main floor is cozy. Even the 2nd floor bedroom is cooler than the train room. BTW, military base housing here doesn't allow A/Cs in the windows, unless you have a good medical reason for it,and then, you still have to PAY to get it PROFESSIONALLY installed!
Bummer. I didn't know you were living on base. "Professionally installed." Wonder who came up with that. Knowing that even if you could get permission, you can't afford the expense. Maybe you need to dig a secret basement for the layout. Hang in there! Cooler days are coming very soon! Boxcab E50
Thank goodness, the cool days are already here... I have the cut rough-finished, the fill rough-finished, both plaster-clothed, painted. Maybe tonite, I can enlist my wife to help me do some ground foam on the fill... She helped me paint the whole area at lunch today. If it is dry enough, I may start scenicking the cut, too. After all, it's just crushed rock, and some trees & weeds... pic ~340K
Weeeell..... not so you would notice, Paul. Although I have installed all the uncoupling magnets in the lumbermill area and hidden yard. Now I need to buy some more to do the industries area! There are a lot more needed on this layout than the old one
