Knew that the title would get your attention ;) This is sort of a cross-post from the Inspection pit. It occurs to me that another nice thing about freelancing is that when an opportunity arises to move to new, but different sized space, you are not constrained by the need to "stay accurate." In my case, a move from my garage to my basemewnt will be very positive, but I will need to make things a bit smaller to fit the new space. So what?!? My mainline run will be a bit shorter and the wye I had planned probably won't happen. The point is, because my railroad is not fixed on a prototype, shrinking, distorting, bending to fit does not matter. My railroad is flexible :D :D ! Happy modeling!

    Hey John ,your shrinking yours and I have to stretch mine. :D Going from 8 1/2' x 10 1/2' to 10 1/2' x 27 1/2'.

Don't feel bad guys- I shrank in both scale AND size (well, my model RR did :D ). It was either that or no railroad at all, so I'll take what I can get.
Nice thing about this shrinkage is, I get to do more in less space.

I will definately be running longer trains :D and they will actually be going somewhere. :D :D Now all I got to do is wait for ATLAS to get their code 55 on the market. All trackage except on bridges will be ATLAS the bridge track will be ME bridge track.

I am in the process of desmanteling my 44 sq foot layout and will be building a around the wall double decker at 90 sq feet. I will be able to run longer trains at greater distance. All double track. I will have to get some more engines and rolling stock to accomplish this. I estimate that I will have about 400 feet of track including the helix and switching yard. Of course this will probably take me years of happy building.

Great attitude guys! No body says you have to have 8 spikes per tie before you can enjoy your empire! I chose to go smaller this time, around the wall, because I wanted to finally have the huge roundhouse I always wanted, and have minimum 30" radius curves for my biggest mallets. I'm on my way too! :D

I am expanding my layout too! I am adding a 18" by 48" extension. I wanted the extension to be 72" long, but there is a silly 24" square concrete beam in the way. I wanted to remove the beam, but since it appears to be keeping the roof of the layout room (and floor of the rest of the house) up, I figured I better leave it in place. That takes me up to 56 square feet...(N-scale of course).

24inch square mountain?? hmm,why not bore through it ???? :D :D :D They sure built these old houses weird. While boring through a wall to put my staging in another room I ran into on the layout side nothing but 3/8" drywall,"BUT" on the other side there was(is) 1/8 plywood veneer paneling-1/8" masonite-1"hardwood tongue and groove flooring(walling?).Damn that hardwood is sure living up to it's name. :D :D

That's the way to stick with it Catt! I have not yet broached the subject of cutting holes in the wall with the wife, but staging in my office/laundry room is what I have in mind...
    Happy Modeling!!

Hay folks look at this idea! I became an apartment dweller hear a year back. So down came my layout of 12 years. This was both biter sweet. My next layout started soon after that. This time I decided to make it portable! This offered me many great options, I can take out modules and change them when ever I wish. I can take it to train shows. I can change the layout as I want or as space allows as I move from one apartment to another. If you want more info on what can be done with a portable modular layout click on my banner / url below! Thanks!

    Sean,
Mobility is the key, as I found when I moved my HO layout a year ago. The layout is gone now, but my new N layout will be semi-mobile. That way if I need to move it, all I do is cut the track at the seams of the modules, move it and reconstruct! Happy Modeling!
