With the new software we can see who has visited recently on Trainboard. Unfortunately there seems to be more guests than members a great deal of the time.

If you are a former member of the site but can't log in please email us at
support@trainboard.com to have your password reset.

If you have never joined why not spare a few minutes to join trainboard and become a part of our site.

If you do join after reading this topic please post here as a welcome to trainboard.

in defense of others like myself, the old software allowed me to log in, and remain logged in for days. The new software seems to kick me out after just half an hour. When I am merely reading the threads, i see no point in logging in, only if i care to post.

just to toss that out there, i had no issues logging in with the new software, (aside from forgetting my password)

    cheers,

I had that happen until I clicked the "Remember Me" box at log in. Now I stay logged in until I manually log off.

    Me Too!

With my cookies working right, I'm always logged in on this computer. I probably ticked "Remember Me" as well.

Nice and easy. All the trainboard staff have done a good job on this one.

(now if I could just get my :beathead: smilie back?) ;)

All Members and Visitors - Please Read This Announcement

If you have not read this please take the time to do so.

This message is directed at all users - especially those who might experience problems logging in or interacting with the site by automated e-mail.

Since the software changes of the past week we have received a lot of accolades here on the site and we appreciate that. We are going to (in a few days hopefully) roll out a new and improved RailImages as well and we are hoping that you are going to like that too.

However, there has been some sniping going on by e-mail behind the scenes and I have taken a blistering from a handful of people. That's okay, I am used to it, so no big deal.

But, the reason for most of this is disconcerting.

We have had three people in the last 24 hours that want to have their membership deleted because they are having problems logging in.

Since we changed the software over 300 people have written with problems logging in.

    Why are they having problems?

One reason was explained in the letter that was posted for everyone coming over from the old forum:

Your login name may have changed! On the old software, you had a login name, a publicly displayed name, and a password. This software does not use a separate login and publicly displayed name. In other words, if your login name was joeblow and the publicly displayed name was BNSF Joe, your login name would now be BNSF Joe and your old login name will have been discarded. (If you used the same for both on the old software, you will not be effected by this.

Other reasons are that many people who just stayed logged in with their TrainBoard cookie forgot their password. It seems some folks have forgotten their displayed name also. Okay, well, I guess we can handle that too.

On the old software, after six years of using it, we knew how to answer most questions almost instantly. You told us the problem, we probably knew exactly what was wrong.

That is not the case with this new software. We are still learning what your problem might be that is keeping you from logging in. (But, we've figured out everything so far that has come from people willing to work through the process.)

However, this software is likely to cause you to encounter many fewer problems than the old software ever did - meaning that there will be fewer issues to resolve in the long term.

It bugs me that three people so far are so angry that they are just going to take their ball and bat and go home. There is no need for that kind of reaction but I guess you can't please everyone - although we do try.

The first place that people are going wrong is that they are blaming us because "your site doesn't work right".

So, to that end, I will answer this by breaking down, where this is, well... breaking down.

Problem #1) You can't log in so you request e-mail from the site to get your password or set a new one.

You do not receive the e-mail that you need to do this. If the e-mail does not arrive, please do not tell us that we are not sending it. We ARE sending it. The problem is that in some cases, some or none of our automated e-mail messages will make it to your computer.

This is caused because the messages are sent by an automated process. Spammers also use an automated process to send their e-mail messages. Many of our messages are detected by e-mail relaying servers, your Internet service provider, or any one of a myriad of software packages that you folks may be running that purports to eliminate spam - as spam! The result is that you never see it. Some of this is out of your control - or ours.

Likewise, many people use services that require the sender of e-mail to visit a web page and type in some letters in a box to cause the e-mail to proceed past that point and on to the recipient. Okay, I get a lot of messages from those services and I always follow up and complete that process. One guy blistered me about our e-mail not working the other day and when I asked him if his e-mail was protected by something like this, it was, "Oh yeah....."

Folks, if not receiving e-mail is your issue, do what millions of other happy surfers have done. Visit the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of any page to talk to a real human.

Problem #2) You are pretty darned sure you know your username and password but you can't login.

I have had a couple of mad people here in the last couple of days that cannot log in and by golly it's our fault.

First thing I do: Try logging in myself with your username and password. Viola! It works!

This narrows it down. I have about 20 computers to try with at work and I try both Firefox and IE and no problem.

If *I* can log in as you, then the problem is on your end.

Actually, one guy said, "Well, of course YOU can log in." Uhh, folks, I log into this site the same way you do. The server is in Texas, I am in the woods in Maine. I do not have any different pipe into the site than you do. Plus, unless I am at work at the radio station, I am on dial-up.

If you cannot log in - in other words, you get an error of some kind, or it logs you right back out, there is some reason this is happening. In many cases, it may be some kind of security software on your computer or a cookie setting or something. If I can log in as you, there is no problem on our end.

Whatever the problem is, we will work with you to resolve it. Tell us exactly what happens and any error message(s) you get.

We are your friends. We like helping people - so stop getting mad and telling us that we have the site all screwed up. The site is working properly.

This is not to say that there will never be problems on our end but the things we are running into right now are mostly settings on your end, etc., and again, we will work through this process with you if you will only be patient.

I try to answer e-mail from you folks just as quickly as I can and if you have ever written for help and not heard back, keep trying - write again. I answer every e-mail. Some of them do not arrive at their destination for a variety of reasons.

When I answer you manually, the mail does not go through the automated system and should arrive without problems. If not, write back to us.

Do not ever think that we blew you off.

Now, are you having a problem?

Click on "Contact Us" at the bottom of this page. I will help you.
