Late last year I started walking off and on during my lunch to help me get back into shape. I work uptown and there are plenty of places to walk to. For a few months I walked around just a few blocks, about 10 minutes or so along Main St or close streets.
Then about a month ago my position was moved close to the outside. (I’m a bank teller and I was moved to the Drive Thru). That is when I starting hearing the sweet symphony of train horns in the distance. A NS mainline runs through town about six blocks from were I work. I did not realize just how busy the line was during the day. So the past few weeks I’ve harffed my lunch down and walked , sometimes ran if I heard a horn, to the tracks. I also started taking my camera with me on my walk. I don’t have a fancy on but I still like it. It is almost always a guaranty that I’ll get to see one. Today was a two for one, a mixed freight and an intermodal. See, exercise is good for you.
Oh, yeah I did join a gym that I go to before work in the morning. I usually get to see on the way considering the route there follows part of the mainline also.
Anybody have a similar or crazy story like this???

I wouldn't call it crazy...but I have also started walking at lunch. Two things got me started, (1) a guy that used to work in my office recently came back to work here. He left a couple of years ago and went to work for Krispy Kreme (Engineering, not Quality Control tester or anything). About a year ago we heard he had a mild heart attack at 44. He's back here and 70-80 lbs lighter. And (2) my dad just had triple bypass.

So, several of us go to the track at the old Linwood school park. That's just across the street from the throat of the Spencer "Hump" Yard. Usually see something or other every day.

i go downtown on my lunch hour and check the signals on the days i drive the carpool. if there is a green light, i park it on the side of the road and eat my lunch there. (its about 3 miles and i have a 30 minute lunch, so i drive) (bnsf has n-s & e-w tracks running through perry, ok). sometimes i take the back highways going to my parents or in-laws to run alongside the tracks.....

good to know i'm not the only one :D

Cause of my vision I have to walk or take the bus / trolly. Folks don't understand why I get off a perfectly good, (free bus), 2 to 5 miles early to finish my trip home.

Since I live next to the commuter rail I don't go out of my way to see them much.

I didn't think that I could win an Olympic medal or anything on that order, however, I have been known to run at lightning speed when I hear a train horn. :D

Oh yes. I have been known to walk, run, bicycle, or jump into the car. A train horn, or better yet, steam whistle, has a hypnotic effect.
