I think it depends on the voltage you are selecting. The output is given in Volt-Amps (Watts by another name). My MRC 2400 says it will deliver 17 V-A. That means that if I want 17 volts it will deliver one amp. Or if I wanted to run my N scale locomotives at 8 volts I could get 2.125 amps out of it.
