    Shawn,

I am going to order my first G Scale boxcar (hopefully after my next paycheck). So, I will be joining the G Scale world, at least in a minimal way.

If I can convince my girlfriend, I will build a small indoor layout.

Years ago, I saw a U boat. Not sure who made it, or what series- U25B? U28B? Split front window? (I hope?) I've thought about that engine a long time. Maybe some day could get one, and hopefully it's close enough in phase(?), to do up as a Milwaukee Road unit. Something just to put up as a display, and stare at it.

I'm in the midst of scratch building a 4 bay cylindrical hopper for my grain trade. Aristo was going to come out with a so-so look alike but it never showed. I would have bought 5 or 6 and lived with the short comings but, well, this is better. A whole lot more work. But better.

I'm painting it this week and making decals for it as well. (O scale CDS x 220%)

There will be a lot more pictures on my web site when it's rolling along.

Been a G scaler for 4 years now and I am modeling 1:20/3 American Narrow Gauge. Just got a new locomotive delivered tonight, an 0-4-2 type. Will have to get some photos of that. In addition I am converting that loco to battery/ radio control using RCS, constructing a log train and building a model of McCloud River RR caboose #05. So I kinda have a full plate right now. ;)

Why did you chose the R/C system that you did?

There are a number of use in our group that want to put DC behind us but every system choice we make has some problem or other. Cost. Support. Range. Ease of operation. Programing. Sound compatibility. Decoder current limits.

For example, I love the Airwire Tx but not the Rx. The Locolinc is nice, but really BIG, and it has limited range.

    Thoughts?

The first three photos show some of the B end details on the typical Government of Canada 4 bay cylindrical hopper. Quite a bit of change wrt the USAT and LGB model so, as well as length, that was an issue. Also, the support structure at the ends of the USAT/LGB was 'rounded off for clearance and it had to be square.

The new cylinder isn't actually 'round' so a piece of pipe isn't going to work even if a person could find one the correct diameter.

Ends had to be fabricated from drawings and photos and wood supports were installed on the frame. The cylinder was rolled over the supports and a redesigned support and roof walk were installed.

There are no decals left on the market. I had to buy O scale decals and blow them up to 1/29th scale and then print my own. I'm still practicing that procedure. The salmon coloured paint is a formula of Reefer Yellow and Box car Red so that's in the works as well. If that doesn't look good on a large scale model I'll use the aluminum and yellow scheme.

    More to come.

I love the way this thread is turning out

Hi again to all, I have read what was in this thread and I have to say I'm pretty excited to see whats here.

BoxcabE50 - Aristocraft makes a GE U25B locomotive and I know they just updated the motors in them to Mubachi 550 ball bearing type motors, they will last a long time.

Dave Winters - I love this project you are doing, I can see I myself can learn alot, I never attempted to kitbash before. I was wondering if you had time if you could put togther a thread in this post on how to make your own decals the way you did thjru the printer. I've heard of this, but never done it. Also maybe where you get the blank decal sheets to print on, much appreciation in advance. I would love to print my own decals up, most places such as modern rails charges $5 per decal set

    Traindude109 welcome aboard

Charlie - Whenever you need help, just let me know, I have started my EMD Trainmans G scale resource thread, alot of good reading on G scale starts there.

I hope this is the begining of many G scale people coming together and sharing ideas

Here are a couple of photos...

It's not technically a 'kit bash' as I cut up a production model. More of a 'model bash' I guess.

The decals were an issue though. CDS has supplied me with all my decals over the years in both N scale and G scale but the G stuff is running out. Nearly nothing available any more so I hope some one steps up and fills the void.

Anyway, there were S scale decals available and that was fortunate for me. My local print shop had already did the calculations for me in converting my 1/64th scale plan up to 1/29th scale work sheets. 220% on their photocopier.

I used my copier to copy the 1/64th (S scale) decals onto a new sheet of paper - in colour of course and they enlarged them to 1/29th scale for me. My local hobby shop had clear decal paper in stock (The auto modellers use it a lot) at 3 sheets for about $10.00. It's called Experts Choice #123. I put that in my copier and made a copy of my new 1/29th scale prints.

I gave the new 'decals' a couple of coats of Microscale liquid decal film with a fine brush and cut them out and applied them as I would have with any other water slide type decal. They're pretty big so I had to use a great deal of care. Some 'decal set' and a spray of Dulcoat and it was done.

I wish I had had the resources to practice a little beforehand because it's clear that one side is a bit better than the other. Well, people don't see both side at once anyway ;-)

    Give it a try.

    Dave

    I'm a G-scaler--1:22.5 and 1:20.3 narrow gauge in a 12x20 foot barn.

1:22.5 equipment consists of a few LGB 2-6-0s, assorted random engines, and 30-40 Bachmann freight cars, 3 LGB coaches, and 6 Bachmann coaches.

1:20.3 consists of a Bachmann 2-8-0 outside frame with Sierra sound, five AMS freight cars, and an Accucraft brass caboose.

Have about 600 feet of track that I want to put outside at some point...

    I've been doing this for fifteen years...and I'm only 18 :tb-nerd:

Robbie, that sounds great, we would all like to see your project of putting this train outside. In the mean time, how about shooting some pictures of what you got in the barn, that sounds neat. I liked Accucrafts 1:20.3 scale narrow gauge trains, just never could afford them, but I guess thats why they came out with AMS. Bachman now makes trains to 1:20.3 scale, but even those are pricey. If I won the lottery I definately would want one of each Accucraft Rio Grande K model steam locomotive they made, K27, K36, ect. AMS makes some nice rolling stock and very well detailed. But I'm sure you are probably only going to run your Bachman stuff outside.

Well I figured I'd post this project here since that's what it seems this thread is for. [IMG]
My Yard Office Project. Need's to be lettered, decaled and have the wood shims down below replaced with Styrene. A fitting "end" to a broken Track Cleaning Car haha
