Hello all - I am new to the site and Z scale. I want to make a wooden case layout in z scale using an Alaska scenery background that will fit in a case approx. 50% bigger than a standard briefcase. I'm wondering where I can get a small z scale power pack (9 volt battery style I suppose) to minimize size. Also I haven't seen any Alaska freight locomotives in z scale though there are plenty in N and HO scale. Appreciate help from the group. Rather than buy a pre-packaged Marklin briefcase layout, I thought it would be fun to make more of a personal scene around a recent vacation as a keepsake for my son.

Hi Augie, welcome to Trainboard. I like your idea for a layout. As far as engines, there is little choice. My suggestion is a little expensive, have someone repaint one. As far as ready to run, the only ones I know is the F7 from Marklin. They are hard to find, and its expensive. I think Marklin also makes a Alaska freight set. Recently, I saw Juerg running a Alaska steam set from FR, but I dont know if its avairlable. FR also makes a great looking PS-2, but I think its sold out. Your best chance of finding this stuff is be patient and look in ebay.

Found an old topic (Click Here) that talks about one (i.e. SD70MAC) being produced in 2005

Darren, AZL found out that the MACs are significatly different then the Ms, and are no longer schedule for production. Too bad, I wanted a CSX MAC.

    Augie,
Contact Loren and Karin Snyder. (tealplanes, I think)They frequent THIS and Z Central and Z-scale forums.
She has roots in Alaska. The Alaska's are a nice set- expensive and not frequently found. If you can't find them elsewhere, I have the Alaska sets -- Like NEW-- that I might part with.
We are almost neighbors-- Ann Arundel County
    Best,
    Fred

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

I'd sure like to see some photos of this layout, as you progress.

Hi Augie, Welcome to Trainboard. Ztrack Magazine sells a 9v battery powered controller, and so does Zthek.

For those who aren't rivet counters, I believe repainting a '70M' in an Alaska Railroad paintscheme should give an interresting result, as well as the repaints we' ve seen in ZTrack about C44-9s repainted in CSX colours (and as far as I know, CSX owns Dash8-40s and AC44-9Ws, but no C44-9s.:lightbulb: )

Other possibilities: repainting a GP9 or a GP35, as I believe AR owned some of them.
