I just saw a post on Trainorders with the news that Al Staufer has passed away at age 88. Al was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a prolific author of railroad books, artwork of rail power, his subject including Steam and other power of the New York Central, the Pennsylvania, the Erie, the Chesapeake and Ohio, Baltimore and Ohio and more. I have two of his NYC books, "Thoroughbreds," all about the famous NYC Hudsons, and "New York Central Steam Power," covering all NYC steam. Both have been heavily used over the years. Al will be missed by railfans as well as his surviving family members. He resided in Medina, OH.
When I saw the topic title, his name seemed vaguely familiar. Couldn't think of why, until reading your post.
Jim, I'm so sorry to read this. I never knew Al Staufer's work, but anybody with that kind of knowledge, especially of the Central, will be sorely missed. Thanks for the notice.
