An airplane crashed on the CSX A line (in a place I am very familiar with) at the north end of Rocky Mount yard, almost at the point designated "Charlie Baker":
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- A day-trip to the North Carolina coast ended tragically for a Wilson couple Sunday afternoon when their single-engine plane crashed in Rocky Mount, authorities said.

Authorities on Monday identified those killed in the crash as Jenny and Thomas Lyndon, both 42, of Canal Street in Wilson. Jenny Lyndon worked for the Wilson Daily Times, while her husband co-owned a heating and air conditioning company.

Thomas Lyndon was piloting the single-engine Cessna when it crashed at around 4 p.m. Sunday at the CSX rail yard at Ward and South Church streets, just south of downtown Rocky Mount.

The National Transportation Safety Board and federal aviation officials are looking for the cause of the crash. It is not yet known whether Sunday's rainy weather was a factor.

Probably not. Having one engine, probably did. It sounds like engine trouble and he was trying to land in the largest open area he could find. I have always wanted a pilots license, and I don't think crashing in a crumpled aluminum ball of flames would bother me. But, my fear is a case like this, where you take someone up with you and kill them, too. A large percentage of small plane crashes I had read about the past few years have involved a pilot, usually novice, taking a friend up to show them flying. Last thing they were shown.

Another good reason to appreciate every sunrise. My prayers go out to the familiy.
