From the TRAINS Newswire: EMD’s new initials will be…. EMD LaGRANGE, Ill. – When the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors spins off into a separate company at the end of March, it will still retain its brand name, Electro Motive, and its initials, EMD. But the initials will stand for something else. According to an EMD spokesman, the new company name will be Electro Motive Diesel, thus preserving the brand and its customer name recognition. General Motors sold its diesel locomotive division to Greenbriar Equity Group of Rye, N.Y. and Berkshire Partners of Boston earlier this year for an estimated $500 million. The sale also covers the company’s marine engineering products. GM entered the locomotive business in 1930 when it acquired Winton Engine and Electro-Motive Corp., Winton's biggest customer. Electro-Motive has become one of the world's largest diesel locomotive manufacturers and has produced more than 58,000 diesel-electric locomotives for customers in 73 countries. The company currently employs 2,600 hourly and salaried workers at facilities in LaGrange, Ill., and London, Ont.
