I am fortunate enough to own a "copy" of Adobe PhotoShop 5.5 from a co-worker,and I am getting the hang of the basics. but I was wondering how to make realistic (with practice) looking smoke comming out of my model steam locos in their pictures? :D

    Espee2,
I have every photo program Adobe makes except Photoshop 5.5, Is their a paint option in Photoshop?
Anyway, my guess is it has, so to add smoke I use 3 colors, black first then gray then white. I use the "paint brush" set to a large diameter and set the edges to 85% "feather" and the "flow rate" to 40%.
Enlarge the image area your going to work in, click on the color bar, select a color, then single click as opposed to click and drag above the smoke stack you want to enhance. This will dot the photo with misted whisps of color.
If your happy with the image, save it as a "new" image, then add more color. (by saving as a new image, the original stays intact in case you totally screw up along the way. (I learned this the hard way)
Also, in the edit box on the toolbar is an undo button, It's only good for the last operation (sometimes the last several, depending on your settings)this will undo the last click you made with your mouse.

I may have covered some things you already know, maybe not! In any event, I'm sure someone will give you more specific's on Adobe.

What Rich says is sound advice but if you do wish to revert to a previous version of your image you should be able to do this on the History fly-out menu. (Accessed from the "Window" option on the toolbar) This history lists all the steps you have made from the initial opening of the image and you can backtrack to the desired one. This is certainly applicable to PhotoShop 5.0
Have fun and hope to see the results on Trainboard soon.
    Best wishes,
    John.

Thanks Rich, for the tutorial! I discovered the "history" menu last night. That is awesome especialy when experimenting. If you do something cool and forget how you did it, you can just look back!

Here is my first attempt :D I couldn't find "flow rate" but I think I did it any way as my brushes come pre-feathered, or hard edge, or you can choose the edge. I also fount the "air brush" and "eraser" valuable. what fun!!

Looks great. Just the right amount of smoke and steam for the situation. And who says "the camera never lies"?

    Nice work!
You've already mastered the first rule and that's keep it simple, don't try and overkill the touch-up.
    What's your next project?

Absolutely amazing for a first try. I have a copy of Photoshop 5.0, but I haven't really had time to learn it yet. Is that a Kato Mikado on a Walthers turntable?

Thanks all! Yes it is a Kato on a Walthers. The red dot you see in the center of the table is so I know how to throw the polarization. It is tricky wiring up a walthers turntable...LOL

My next project is trying to figure out how to cut out a section of an image and replace it with something else. Also to make realistic "heat waves" above deisel exhaust. any pointers? thanks!

Thanks Hank! it is simply: Grimy Black... and a thin wash of a rust colored paint over it. I don't use pastels. The Pit is concrete color with a very thin wash of grimy black :D

    Hi espee2
The subject of cutting out a section of an image to replace it with something else, was posted on this forum under Real or Model January 29th. My little demo and how to do it appears there. It is also on my website in Model Photography. <A HREF="http://www.badger-creek.co.uk" TARGET=_blank>http://www.badger-creek.co.uk.
This is three photo's into one.
