I caught a pair of nicely painted Aberdeen, Carolina & Western Railway units awaiting an interchange with CSX for their last trip in the Carolinas: http://hhodnett.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=646643 It seems that all of the pre-Dash 2 power is being purged, with one notable exception.... Harold
They are on the way to Waycross, GA. There is a used loco dealer there. Info gotten from a list that I am on.
Odd..........wonder who will get these, as GP38s are this generation's GP7/9s. Even some GP40s have been derated & rebuilt to GP38-2 specs. I know for sure some GP35s (hello, MoPac) have been rebuilt to GP38 specs (turbo removed, 645 power assemblies in place of 567D assemblies, derating to 2000 HP). Unless there are serious problems with these units, I feel they won't be unemployed for long.
Well here is the updated destination for these units according to what I have read. Progress Rail in Patterson Georgia. IMHO, I think that they should keep them as they seem to run quite well from what I have read. I guess they think that they dash 2 version is better but, who knows?? Maybe they just have too much etra $$ to spend.
Those units are in pristine condition - well looked after. If they are looking at replacing these with an upgraded model, I would expect an upgrade to -2 (or even one of the many -3) specs to be a great option for these. Provided the engines/generators are still in good order it should be a less expensive route than new (old) replacement units.
Those are really nice units and the locals seem to really like them. The RR has aquired several GP40-2's to replace them (Canadian cabs!) Harold
