Hello all, I'm currently getting toward a stage where I have to get rid of the old crummy shelving unit that stands between me and fulfilling the purpose of the Kootenay Division, and I want to transfer a bunch of stuff to storage above the top deck of my layout. (height of roughly 70-86") The whole hanging-a-shelf-from-the-ceiling thing is pretty easy, but I'd love to see what creative ideas you lot have come up with.

    Post what you have!

FWIW, I would never store anything over a layout. The risk of damage to the layout by dropping something, or an overloaded shelf unloading itself, is simply too great. I would only ever store things under a layout--reluctantly--and if I was so inclined, then I'd use rolling shelves and cabinets so I still have access to the underside of the layout.

I agree with David. Storage above a layout is inviting disaster. Most modelers have many hours invested in the hobby to risk damage. I have been storing stuff under layouts for years without any issues however. I use plastic crates with lids (designed for Christmas decorations) to hold all my gear and supplies. They don't roll but they are movable, stackable and protect the contents.
