I did a search for the answer but could not find it... I want to install sound in my dcc steam loco's but before I do I'd like to know... Can you turn the sound off and on.. I know some might say why,, and the answer to that is, the location of my layout..it will at times, with sound on my loco's drive my family crazy when watching TV if I run my trains with the sound on....right now I run them on dc... and if you can turn it off and on is it a pain or rather easy to do,, BTW I do not have dcc control yet for my layout, I am still in the saving stage, just looking ahead,, Thanks

Most sound decoders can be muted. (NO SOUND) via using function 8. The function number may very from one manufacture to the other.

You can also customize F8 in most decoders by specifying a certain volume level, so instead of muting it with dead silence, you can have the sounds play back at a quieter level instead.

You need a DCC controller to change any sound or other functions on a decoder. The decoder manual will specify the CV's to adjust. All the sound decoders usually too loud. I suspect the decoder companies use children to set the volume. lol
