Ignore the screwy truck name in the title, I couldn't change it after launching the thread. I am referring to the truck used on the EMD SW units. A while back I came across a picture on the web of a GP unit (Great Northern IIRC) which had trucks swapped from an SW-9 or such under it for some reason (transport, engine shop work, or whatever else it was for). Can anyone point me to a link to that photo? I should have saved it when I found it but didn't think to. I am considering modeling this unique engine and plan to use a modified set of Life Like SW-9 trucks for that purpose (IIRC, I swapped out the double gear for one from an older Atlas/Kato RSD-4). Did some of the Canadian GP-9's also use the shorter wheelbase truck (although they were flexicoil?) A flexicoil set-up for the Life Like trucks would be a boon for Canadian modelers. I know that MBE has made the sideframes, but a part from Shapeways could make the swap simple.
NC&StL (became part of the L&N), Alaska and the US Army owned factory build AAR Type A trucked GP7s: http://gelwood.railfan.net/ln/ln495dsa.jpg shows two ex NC&StL AAR Type A trucked Geeps. I hope it helps Stephan
"NC&StL (became part of the L&N),..." The L&N acquired controlling interest in the NC back in 1880... merging the line in 1959... the NC units were purchased with the backing of the L&N. I remember to this day the day back in 1970 when I got to see three of these units on the branchline that runs east from Nashville (now operated by the Nashville & Eastern) with three of these switcher trucked units on a train. They remain the only ones I got to see in person. Only the Army and NC&StL acquired these units new, with the ARR receiving theirs around 1960. Some photos show that the ARR units received ALCO B-trucks (from retired ALCOs) either before or during rebuilding in the 70s... http://www.alaskarails.org/pix/former-loco/JS-1826.html http://www.alaskarails.org/pix/former-loco/UK-1825.html
Hi John There may be a way to get a Geep with type a trucks. The Concor made version of the old Rivarossi SW-1200 (sold as an SW-1500) was on a Kato style chassis. I have put Atlas/Kato type B trucks under a modified ConCor chassis. Therefore it's likely the type A trucks will fit under an Atlas/Kato Geep chassis. Sadly, this chassis needed the N Scale of Nevada stretched chassis to make it look right. This may need to be checked by someone, but is a potential option for you. Cheers Steve
Hi Steve, I already have the mechanism worked out, I just can't remember where I saw the picture of the engine I want to model.....LOL! I model early merger BN and I believe it was a GN unit that was being transported for repairs or such
