I had Friday afternoon off from work, and did a little railfanning. First off is an NS stack train southbound at Winton Place: I then scooted over to the Western Hills viaduct to grab this shot of the Queensgate Engine facility: I didn't want to spend too long on the viaduct, the last time I was there I was stopped by the police (just told to leave, as this view is on the non-sidewalk side). My plan was to go to Covington to get a s/b CSX w/ the skyline in the background, and then move over to the NS bridge at Ludlow and catch a s/b there. As it turned out, I ended up staying on the CSX line the rest of the afternoon. Next up is a southbound autorack train heading through Covington - just south of the Ohio River bridge. I've wanted to get this shot for awhile, with the Cinci skyline in the background: Like I said, my plan was to head over to Ludlow, but as I was driving under the CSX bridge, I saw a very slow moving s/b headed by a patched Conrail unit, so I raced back to try to catch it (I think the overpass is 8th street). I made it, and missed a meet by about 1 minute as n/b grain train came through, and stopped just prior to this shot:
After getting that shot, I figured I may be able to beat the grain train across the river -- I made it w/ about 30 seconds to spare, and grabbed this shot w/ the Cincinnati Enquirer building in the background. This is just off the bridge over the river. And finally, passing in front of the old Hudepohl brewery, on its way down the viaduct and into Queensgate Yard. I'll have to go over to Ludlow and catch some NS next time, as I had to get home....but it was a fun afternoon.
Notice the refuge on the bridge in this shot. I presume there is no walkway across the bridge? Great pictures and an excellent narrative.
Nice set of photos Dave. That NS shot, looks like they just grated the dirt in that area. Was that pretty accessible?
Buddy - I'm not sure what that graded area is all about. It's about 1 mile south of the Winton Place overpass, between Winton Place and the north end of Queensgate Yard. What's interesting is that it is between the tracks and I-75, with the only access being from the dirt road that parallels the tracks (I rode my mountain bike in along the access road). So I'm curious to see what they are going to build there - I would think that it is going to be railroad related)
