Ed, I as a Z scaler, I don't want to sound provincial, but what would be the answer if it was not posted under Z, but maybe N perhaps? Can't work done by the better modelers ever stand on its own merits? Has anyone ever considered this point of view? Cheers, Jim CCR
Okay, now you have me confused. Did I not understand what you were asking? Your original question was: "Then what did give this fine work away as Z scale? I think to most of us this probably looks real." And my answer was: "I've been following this from the start and I agree that it would be hard to tell just from the photos. Outstanding work." I'm sure that someone with a keener eye for details like rail height or flange depth or something else might be able to pick it out as Z, but I sure wouldn't have been able to tell if it hadn't been posted on the Z forum. Regards Ed .
What a masterful job of blending the layout with the outdoors. Its hard to see where it ends and where it begins.
Ed, I'm sorry if I confused you. Let's try my question another way. What if Torsja's photo was posted in Railimages generally without any reference to scale? Would a viewer arbitrarily add a Z, or N, or HO in their comments to the photo? Just wondering how this wonder work would go over with everyone if it wasn't listed under a scale. Cheers, Jim CCRR
Boy, Jim, I don't know. That's a good question. And one that I can't even guess at. But let me make just one other comment, not really answering your question. When I look at this work, and consciously think about it being done in Z, I'm just amazed that such can be achieved in so small a scale. But often (and I've dropped in on the thread regularly since the beginning) I'm actually oblivious to the scale, and I'm just sitting here admiring just how good it looks. Best regards Ed
Ed, Good reply. I too wish that references to scale didn't seem so important. They have their purpose of course, but I look at photos of other scales and simply enjoy doing so. It wouldn't bother me in the least if some of the great modeling I've seen here on Trainboard made me wonder what scale it was. Cheers, Jim CCRR
Well how one can tell ya ask... I understand this is Z and it is incredible that this level of realism has been achieced especially in Z, so don't go off that I don't know a good model when I see one. I am just trying to let ya know some of the ways one can tell it is Z since YOU SocalZ 44 asked... ... ...:tb-cool: The pilot on the GP9 is big and open. The knuckle dosen't look real. The background (real) scenery is too big in porportion to the model scenery. The engine dosen't have any detail, I know being Z this would be near to impossible, it is hard enough in N... The red Chevy in the pic has resin bubbles in it. One can see some dust on things in the model ( I know this IS impossible)!!! especially in western Nebraska where it seems the wind is blowin all the time. Some of the glue joints on the buildings and or utility poles seem a tad bit thick. The track dosen't look real. I know this IS Z and it is hard to make things this small. The cotton coming from the chimneys is a dead give away. The trees don't look real. I KNOW THIS IS A MODEL HOBBY, it was asked how you/one could tell this was a model as if it were the real thing. I guess it is in the eyes of the beholder... Yes I am a rivit counter and darn proud of it...:tb-biggrin: Cheers A Happy and Content Picky Rivit Counter!
And yes MY modeling and picture taking skills have much to be desired but I as well as many other modelers are trying to improove our skills here...
Yah I answered the Q alright... Z is just too dang small for me. !!!:tb-mad: I wish I could do it, short on temper. N is small enough with all the small detail parts and all. Sometimes I get to a cussin and yellin real bad so I quit (modeling) for a while, I know one is supposed to get relaxation out of a hobby but sometimes it just gets plain irritating! Then hope I didn't do the above loud enough to have a neighbor call in to the police about noise disturbance!
It is an outstanding layout, and even more outstanding since it is Z scale. It inspires me to do better work in Z, and it gives me munition to shoot at people who say that Z scale is impossible to work with.
Gees Torsja !!! Best ever !! You really figured out the depth of focus and lighting. I love it. Need a few of these in 1600x size for my 1962 pixel display sceen saver !!! Yeow. .
Torsja! Are you kidding me?!?!?!! WOW!!!! I am truly amazed at the realism you've achieved in Z! Fantastic!!! I've been away for awhile so I haven't seen much of this thread since the first of the year. Congratulations on the fine work!!!
