What color scheme were the passenger cars on the Broadway Limited? I've asked several places but nobody seems to know. Were they Brunswick Green? Brown? Silver? Purple? I remember seeing photos of brown consists in the late sixties, but am curious if that dates back to the earlier times that Kato's offering may be based on. Thanks. Jack

From 1938-ish until about 1948-ish it was the two-tone Tuscan "Fleet of Modernism" scheme with gold lettering and striping. Post 1948 it was simply Tuscan with Buff lettering and striping.

Thanks Dave. I just knew that was a simple question to get answered. :teeth: Were most of the GG1s used in freight service? Is that why they were mostly green while the passenger trains were Tuscan? Other than the Kato poster, I don't think we've seen anything suggesting that the GG1 won't be Tuscan.

GG1s were built for passenger service, but many were re-geared for freight service later. Most were green, but some were painted Tuscan. In fact, a few G's were painted silver.

    Jack,

ALL Gs were originally green with 5 stripes. So green Gs pulled all the passenger and freight trains up and down the Corridor and to Harrisburg. In 1952, with the introduction of the re-equipped Congressional, 10 Gs were painted Tuscan. These Gs were used exclusively for Congo service. Green Gs stilled pulled the other passenger trains, including the Broadway. Green and Tuscan were still 5-striped. In 1955, the PRR changed the 5-stripe livery to the one-stripe. This transition was really slow, and some Gs never got the repaint because the PC was formed. In '55---of the ten Tuscan Gs---three were repainted in Silver livery. These were used exclusively on the Congo. Two of the ten were repainted Tuscan with 1-stripe. The other five Tuscan 5-stripe units were repainted 1-stripe green.

    BZ,

Don't forget that freight GG1s were also used on the Trenton Cutoff, the York Haven Branch, and the Atglen and Susquehanna Branch. Also there was a seperate electrified freight line that paralleled the NEC into DC, continuing to POT yard.

The word from Leon is that the GG1 will be the 5 pin-stripe with the Keystone. The Broadway cars will be in the brown colour.

The few photos of Broadway lightweights in Beebe & Clegg: The Trains We Rode are all black and white and mostly undated. There are two close-ups that show details of the diner and observation. Both are a two-tone scheme, a darker band at window level bordered by striping, and smaller stripes, one above the band and five below. Roofs are an even darker color, black assumedly. The keystone drumhead is lettered Broadway Limited with a 4-track motif.

An interesting scheme for Kato to capture.
