I am spontaneous in my travels on vacation. I get an idea while sitting at home, either the evening before, or the same morning, "Let's go somewhere". I bagged a rare bird at the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology, the GMDH-1, one of a very few examples of diesel hydraulic locomotives built by EMD/GMD. Four GMDH-1s were built between 1955 and 1959. This one was used as the GMD shop switcher for a number of years. You may recognize this as the very one in the Second Diesel Spotter's Guide.
very cool. Only a handful of hydraulic locos were built for class 1 North American use (I said locos, I know about the Budd RDC's) Baldwin made a switcher and a passenger train, The SP had Krauss-Maffei build 18 units, the D&RGW got 3, but sold them to the SP, and ALCO built 3 DH-643 for the SP. Nice to see that they saved at least one. Only 1 of the SP KM's are left today
