How much of the Algoma Central is left? I mean how much of their infrastructure, motive power is still active? Square miles of track? Matt [ February 26, 2006, 08:15 PM: Message edited by: Matt in liverpool ]
Matt It is still around and active The Algoma Central Railway (ACR) runs 296 miles throught relatively untouched northern Ontario wilderness from Sault Ste. Marie (or 'The SOO', from the pronounciation of the word 'Sault'), Ontario to Hearst, Ont. and 26 miles from the division point at Hawk Junction, ONT. to Michipicoten Harbour on Lake Superior. The ACR is mostly a freight railroad, but its passenger service has become world-famous because of its Agawa Canyon Tour Train. This daily excursion train travels 113 miles north from Sault Ste. Marie to the scenic Agawa Canyon park, which is only accessible by rail. here are a couple of Links http://www.trainweb.org/algoma/ http://algomacentral.railfan.net/algoma1.htm And here is a link to another North Railway http://www.onrgallery.com/opening.html
Thank you for your reply. I always wondered about the ACR. I have seen alot of photographics about this railroad, it seems that it would be gone after merging with WC then CN. I am glad it is still around. Wasn't there a recent derailment involving an engine SD 42-2 and about 30 ore cars recently? Matt
Matt Sorry about that. I just discovered from a friend that Algoma Central was merged with CNR back in 2001. So they no longer exist. Got to take care of the models that I do have now
Owen, That is a shame. The Algoma Central seemed to be an icon. If they could have turned a profit, then the creeping eye's of CN would have cast else where. I wonder how much of the 296 miles CN use? Keep in touch. Matt
Seems to me that I recall Wisconsin Central had acquired control of ACR. Then when CN got WC, they inherited the ACR as well. Boxcab E50
So, the Algoma Central colors are gone also? CN trains travel this route. Are the total number of miles the ACR used the same under CN or have they cut the route down alittle? Matt
What ever happened to the passenger trains on AC? Did the WC do away with those? Or were they gone beforehand? Boxcab E50
Neither, I believe the passenger trains are still running. http://www.agawacanyontourtrain.com/content/tours/passenger/
That's good news! Those train are certainly well known. I hope present management understands their value! Boxcab E50
