After the merger of the B&O and the Western Maryland. Why did the Chessie System only run the north side if the river? Art
Harold. The Yocagheney River fron Confluence to Pittsburgh where it forms part of the Ohio River. On the other side of the mountain Wills Creek runs into the patomac River at Cumberland. I don't remember if there is anything from Myersdale to Confluence. John being as you live in Myresdale is there a river or creek that runs to Confluence? Art, Yes theirs 2 rivers that runs through Meyersdale, the Casselman, and flogerty, and then small streams that feed into the Casselman, the Blue Lick creek and I believe Elk Lick. But all them all evenually run together into the Casselman. But on the question of the railroads I'm not exactly sure but if i'm right I believe its because Chessie System already ran most of the places that WM ran.... Anyway untill the merger that is...
Ya got me now, Art, I am not that familiar with the Chessie. Why did the Chessie only run on the north side?
If the information I was given years ago is correct? There is supposed to be a federal Railway law that one Railroad canot controle both sides of a federal water way. Western Maryland was primarly singel track and the B&O double track on the north side. Shortly after the merger The Western Maryland track and ties were removed so another Railroad couldn't operate there and half of the Ohio Pile Bridge was removed. I understand that the Western Maryland is now a Bicycle trail from Ohio pyle to Myresdale but I could be wrong. Art
Art, You are correct on the Bike trail. Its called "Rails To Trails" and goes from Ohio Pyle to the Salisbury Viaduct almost to Meyersdale.
