...Completed! I spoke of doing a few SWMT "slugs" in Chessie System, and Western Maryland, And even one or 2 in CSX. I'm not sure as to how many, but I know I got one Chessie done, an working on the Western Maryland slug at the moment! Which I'll try to get pictures of it once its done as well... Maybe in the process of building it..... Being I have to barrow a digital camera to get good detailed pictures.....

I also spoke of doing a 3 unit set of B&O RF-16a's.... In B&O passenger livery.... And I have one of the units done an the other unit waiting for decals.... And the process of bashing a B unit for the ABA set.....

Heres the pictures of my work so far....

A picture of the first slug to be completed... showing its size, an the class "B&O #138T" Setting on my test track. Note that it is coupled to another loco to the left... Another loco I had planed an completed as well...

Showing the end an details an the find handrailing..... And grab handles etc... With it still coupled to the other unit, both setting on my test track.

Showing the other end of the slug. Showing the air tanks that I had made a topic for here to get some used ones or new ones! And lots of paint bottles in the background!

On this slug, it was made or well based off a AHM/IHC GP-18, I have quite a few of these, and being the B&O only ever had one, I made one in full GP-18 looks, an another one freelanced into Chessie System as well for the hec of it.... This is the "other" Chessie unit the slug is coupled to in the pictures...

I custom painted this an lettered it, as its got the original AHM/IHC motor an drive, but a custom fitted drive shaft to accomadate a flywheel on one end of the motor an dirrectional lighting...

And heres the B&O RF-16a I also got done....And working on the second A unit to the set an then will begin working on the B unit after the 2 A units are completed.

The front of the shark.... Hard to believe this is a Mantua/TYCO unit with an older Athearn F-7 powered frame, an the Mantua/TYCO truck side frames!

The side of the unit.... Showing I still have a few details to get for it being it had no "bugboard" or number board as it should. I'll buy detail parts for those an paint them an number them an glue them to the body once I find the ones I need!

And now a full broad side veiew..... ENJOY!

Great job John. Nice recycling of an old locomotive.

One of these days I will get a Sharknose. I am partial to Baldwins since my father worked there.

    Bob,
I figured everyone will! THANKS! So which of them you like so far? the slug, or the RF-16a ???? :D

    Tom,
I do alot of making my own stuff to run how I want it an fiddling with drives to fit different bodies etc.... I just couldn't hack that old Mantua/TYCO drive. I pulled pretty good but got hot fast, it wasn't the "pancake" motors tho, It originally had the DC-71 motor built right into the one truck so...... Was a waaaaaay better motor then what the old TYCO "pancale" motors were.... I hope to get more posted for everyone as I find room to get pictures hosted....

The EM-1 is real sharp looking! I really love the camelback though as I have always had a fondness of these "little engines that could".

Did these models come already with the B&O nameplates up front or are those aftermarket? They really add a touch of class!

    Russ,
That EM-1 is my pride an joy an the name sake of my shop! Being it was a Yellowstone type locomotive in real life an not to mention my grandfather engineered a few different road numbers of EM-1's, as well as the "7600" First of class. So being It has a history to me, I had to have one in HO scale! Custom retooled to be just that, an EM-1, "7600" my favorite number. All built from a 1960's version Rivarossi Big Boy!

As for your question on the B&O capitol Dome on the boiler fronts, those are aftermarket brass detail parts from Cal-Scale. All I did to each of them was polish the day lights out of each one, then painted the face, an then left it dry an once dry, polished the face again to take the paint off the raised edges, an then cleaned them with alcohol to take off any brass dust from polishing, an chips etc. Then used clear high gloss finger nail polish to cover the shiney brass luster so they would corrode or loose the brillance of themself after being polished, an made sure they fit the hole driled for them and glued from inside the boiler casting....

As for that "lil engine that could" she sure does! :D I tell you for its size its amazing to see it in action on the same train I had 1 articulated coupled to pulling like its out running mainline with the big guys! :D I've had that one for quite awhile.... 11 years and its never gave me no trouble. Its the only CamelBack I have right now, even tho, like you i have a spot in my heart for the Camelbacks an Mother Hubbards.... I want to get one of the 2-8-0's Camelbacks by Mantua next! If I can find one! And maybe even the IHC 2-6-0 Mother Hubard as well....

    EDIT:
Forgot to say THANKS for the kind words! It inspires me to do more. As I know I will! :D

    Steve,
I'm a partial to Baldwin, (being a steam fanatic) so... I do like the Sharks.. They had their own beauty all to themself..... You couldn't mistaken one of those for any other locomotive in the first generation diesel era! Most of the steamers I've modeled in HO scale are Baldwin designs....

As for N scale shaks, I think Con Cor has them an also theirs another company that has them as well. C'on guys help me here. I can't think of the company that offers the new shark.... [IMG] ER Models if I'm not mistaken.... Corect that guys if its not right. As I'm not to familar with the N scale companies.... :D

That little 0-4-0 Steve is the lil engine that could..... and does.. its a strong puller for its small size! It was an still is in the top ranks of my favorite loco! Being it was the first steamer I bought that was made by Mantua! He's got hi own display case thats 2 shelves, an shares that display case with the second Mantua loco I ever bought as well.. the "General" 4-4-0. Those 2 loco's were the first 2 Mantua loco's I ever bought back in the early 1990's....

Ok I posted a few projects..... that are DONE! Now.. I got a few in work projects to post.....

This loco began life as a regular 1980's version Life-Like, GP-38. I have a few of these an decided to make this one a CSX RDMT, a road mate.... "slug" with a cab, controls etc.... Just these slugs were crew friendly, quiet cabs being the prime mover was taken out, the hood doors all removed an a smooth plate in their place, the radiator fans on rear top of body removed, being no motor for cooling an no radiator grilles. All that remains, is the Dynamic Brake blister, and its unit cooling fan, an enerial air filter behind cab. These units were commonly used as "the point" locomotive, for the crew quiet inside, an all.... And was able to MU an control all the other units it was MU'ed to, an so on..... It only had the axle motors that ran off the "mother" unit prime mover an generator.... Heres what it looks like now....

Side view, showing the hood doors cut out and also the radiator grilles gone as well. All replaced with smooth plastic for the sides, and the dynamic unit still in tact.

This shows the op of the long hood, with the radiator grilles removed, plated over on the inside to hole the putty in place I smoothed them over with. This putty is actually soft plyable epoxy, thats sandable an finished and ready for base coat an painted CSX. ENJOY! :D

another project I'm working on, is this steam loco. Its an older IHC Mikado.... It was bought at a yard sale for a whoppin' 8 dollars! Only missing the front, an trailing trucks. It has a full square tender, but that may change being I haven't decided which B&O Mikado its going to be..... It could be a Q-3, or a Q-4, I can't remember off hand which had the square tender or which had the vanderbuilt tender, but the 2 railroad classes had 2 different type tenders. Plus I have to built a pilot deck to the front of it, drill holes for the stand-off handrailing (yes the hand railing was molded onto the boiler casting) and I had slowly taken it off to put the add on hand railing an turned hand rail stanchions.... here it is....

And the next picture shows the front. the boiler smoke box front is missing in the picture, BUT I have that, just removed it to add my own head light an all an will later add it to the loco once again....

These 2 loco's (the DP-38, an this Makdo) should look good again an be on the roster soon! :D

That cabbed road slug reminds me of KCS's F-unit slugs- massive concrete block in place of the prime mover, control stands still in cab. They were last used on the old L&A as well as the line in Texas, especially on the lignite trains. One that I know of is "stuffed & mounted" in KCS colors in northwest Arkansas, while another is in Kiamichi RR colors next to the depot in Hugo, OK.

Gotta be good on the senses riding in a cabbed road slug............

    Bob,
I'm an odd ball. to say the least! Anything noone makes, I just gotta have in the worst way! :D So.. I make my own! Just like my other slug, thats a Chessie System unit, and the Western Maryland slug that I'm working on... Both are cut down slugs or SWMT's so.... an I seen the RDMT "Road Slugs" and being different, I liked them so... Now I'm making one of my own! :D

As you said tho, they were filled with concrete blocks for traction weight for pulling so... BUT Both the slugs I have partially done, an the one I'm currently building, will all be powered, (I have to have the package deal under the doos so to speak) :D So....

I got a few new things to make to think of it... HA I went railfanning today.... OHH BOY!
