Has anyone noticed that the new Kato SD 90's don't pick up as much dirt on their wheels as other locos?I have to clean my wheels quite freequently, except on my 90.I wonder if they used a diffrent metal?
Also,I saw a post about getting paint to stick to plastic hand rails a while back, but can't seem to find it now.Can anyone refresh me?I'm having a real problem with this now.(Just started airbrushing. So easy and great results! Why did I wait so long?!!)

Haven't run my SD80s enough to really comment, but Paul Graf of Atlas has commented in the past that several of their locos showed very different dirt grabbing characteristics even though the metal was supposed to be the same, his comments were in part directed to the time Kato made their stuff so who knows.

I think you are referring to vinegar etching to get paint to stick on "slippery" engineering plastics such as Delrin.

A few guys from my club left handrails in vinegar for over a week and no problems.I wouldn't suggest it though.

    Dangerboy,

What I noticed is that generally the Kato engines don't get their wheels dirty as fast as Atlas ones. The difference is rather significant. So, I don't know what the difference is between Kato and Atlas wheels, but there must be a difference.

I usually leave them in the vinegar overnight. To be honest I have never tried longer or shorter times by more than a few hours, so not sure what the "window" is but ~20-27 hours has always worked for me. I usually use ModelFlex paint for handrails as I find it adds less thickness than most AND tends to flake off less.

I just bought a SD90 a couple days ago and I must say that it runs a lot better than some of the Atlas engines I own. What a beauty and it is very smooth. Does anyone know what type of metal is used for the wheels on these engines?

kato's sd 90 ought to run good it is big enough to be an HO engine. It is a very fine engine though.
