I bought these 2 wood-and-white-lead kits on the cheap at a swapmeet and decided to build them during a lull in work on Sweethome Alabama. The Piledriver is a Paige Models kit and the shovel is a Rio Grande Models kit.

I decided to build them while Sweethome Chicago was still packed up after travelling at Easter and was happy with the results, so imagine the disappointment when both of them snagged all the tell-tails and wouldnt fit under either of the bridges at the ends of the layout.

    D'oh!!!

Here's some photos anyway, although I can't see them running on the layout anytime soon.

Yes, I have encountered that problem myself...misery loves company, eh, Jon?

I had someone send me a surplus 200 wrecker crane (he had five or six kits he didn't really know what to do with...), and I have put it to good use. However the first time I tried to have it towed into one of my cut-down tunnel portals...

well sorry that dont have the clearence that is needed for you layout. But you do have some wonderful models that you can use as foreground scenery when others come to see the layout.

Was it that darn, "feet to meters" thing? Don't worry, NASA did it, too! Hopefully yours didn't set you back 100 Mil!

After taking out numerous tunnel entrances, trees, phone poles, grade crossings, switch stands, dwarf lights, signal stands, ROW gangs, puppies and small children the first thing I did on the current layout was cut out some .40 styrene gauges:

    Car Height.
Passenger car/long freight car/engine swing out.

Helps, not all the time, but it helps.

Hey Jon they're gear-fab ! How about just staging a 'perminant' work scene (like it's digging out a right of way and don't bother rolling it in a train. Small old engine 'pushing it. You know, all static and people can ooh and ah at the scene going on. Maybe a cop car blocking traffic, laborers...night scene with bright lights on it all. Kinda what you got there but off the main line. And fugeddaboudit !!
