I recently got a digital camera for Christmas, and the second day out the lens froze in place, gumming up the works. It was a Kodak CX6445. I called the place where my wife got the camera, and took it back for an exchange. The clerk at the photo lab told me that she had gotten 4 other cameras of this model with the same problem- apparently when the lens is zooming in, it sticks when it's fully extended from the body. I wound up getting another digital (same amount of megapixels and features as the one I returned) for a bit less money. I don't blame the store- they apparently got a batch of defective models. If I were you, I'd steer clear of any Kodak cameras with the model number CX6445. FTR- the new camera is a Kodak CX7000 series, and I took it out on a "test drive" with good results, so far.
Certainly no fun to have this happen. But it sounds like the store was good in helping with the problem. That's a plus for future reference. Boxcab E50
