BOULDER - It's not a train that blocked traffic in Boulder Thursday morning; it was the 120-year-old train depot. The building is being moved a block from 30th and Pearl Street to Pearl and Foothills Parkway, the site of Boulder's planned Transit Village, which is part of the redevelopment of the Crossroads Shopping Center. Wednesday morning Sky9 flew over Boulder to check out the progress of the move. At that time the building, which was originally built 1890, was still being moved and streets in the area of 30th and Pearl were still closed. Boulder Police said the move took longer than planned and that they expected the closures to continue until at least 1 p.m. It’s not the first time the historic building has moved. Historic preservationists relocated the depot from its original location at 14th and Canyon Boulevard to 30th and Pearl back in 1973. Pressure from developers prompted the building to move again this year, this time just down the block.
Well...as a preservationist I hate to see it moved from its original location, but as a historian I am THRILLED that it was not simply torn down. I look forward to seeing it in its new place (IF I can find the mall...it has been a lot of years since i spent time there )
