I wish I could chase it like usual... Since I likely can't, I'll post an older doubleheader shot of the UP's finest lady of the rails: [ April 05, 2006, 09:00 PM: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
The UP 800s were, I believe Northern type engines. I fired many of them in passenger service. I didn't care for the exhaust steam injectors though. But those engines sure ran smooth at 90mph.
UP 844, as the last steamer UP bought was classed FEF-3. Four-Eight-Four (good one, Russ!), 3rd order or run. They do ride nice at speed.... Don't ask how I know...
Hemi, I saw on another forum which will remain nameless, that the 844 was out this week. Oh yeah, you aren't there anymore. Ask Nathan.
April 27 Denver Union Station I got this Thursday afternoon last week. Lighting was ok, not great. Hope to see more pics from this trip. One of the few this year.
Got to see her and her tiny train today between Pastura & Ancho, NM. Supposedly she was running about an hour late at Santa Rosa, NM. We heard that the crowd was maybe 200 @ Santa Rosa. The entourage was not huge. About 25 cars, vans, jeeps etc. were chasing with a few that dropped out and others who came on in Vaughn. Most honored the photo lines. There were some jerks (like always) in the group would not get out of others shots. The UP Police were polite and did let some that trespassed on RR ROW know they needed to get off or ... One first-timer (never before railfanned) @ Ancho had climbed a signal tower.
Here she is in all her glory. Train was stopping at Newman, New Mexico to drop off some rail gang crews and signal crews and pick up some dignitaries to carry in to the yards. Earlier at Orogrande, we were standing 35 feet from rails as the train went past at 70+mph. A reeeeaaaallllll thrill. Photo by J.E. Motts More jpegs later if anyone wants them. Check out this movie clip. The 844 was at medieum speed 65-70mph when I took this at Orogrande, New Mexico. Real thrill !!!!
