Does anyone know if any of the RR 's ever put thier Logo on their water tanks? i.e. NP or GN or UP ? if so do you know of any fotos avail of these? I have googled or such and did not find any. thanks Paul
Yes. But as i recall, not consistently. It has been too many years for me, since those days you are modeling. If I recall correctly, the ex-NP water (steel) tower at Wheeler, Washington, still has the BN name and logo on it.
Wheeler Washington?? Now theres a town I haven't heard of in a looong time. All I remember about Wheeler was trailers with picture windows and red lights. :startled:. Sorry for the nostalgic bump. Come to think of it that may make an interesting module. Brian
I have seen a photo or two of a Rio Grande water tank, with a logo. Not sure if these were original, or a movie setting embellishment, or?
The Frisco had a 50,000 gallon wooden water tank in Beaumont KS and it had the Frisco logo on it. They also had a steel tank that sported the Frisco Lines logo. So it would depend upon your particular railroad.
Well, I was wondering if it was a matter of course and not just a whim that some logo's got put on water tanks. My thru rail roads NP,UP,GN plus my freelance roads all run steam and need tanks . I got three water tanks and was not sure if RR's shared or not ..... I have three staging stub tracks and a fourth for the town depot off the main line and just for fun was going to decale each roads water tank . Still not sure if each gets a coal tipple and bulk plant ( old tank car ) for diesel . After reading up on stand pipes maybe one tank and three stand pipes ... or like where I live there was a 50,000 gal tank that the BN / BNSF had on their ROW at MP 11.2 south of town next to the highway, located on Cocololla creek which flows under the tracks ... I guess I could keep one tank for freelance road and use one tank on the main lines siding - stub and put the other by the depot , just in case they cannot get to their home track ??? I would like to do what would seem reasonable and then put the RR logo on the tank, or advertising or ??? ... just for fun .
Attached is a link to a public domain photo from the national archives showing the water tower at the Erie railroad shops in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. This picture appears to be from the early 70's. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2e/Susquehanna_Shops_-_Erie_RR_1971a.jpg
Thanks for the foto . I caught the air raid siren on the Susquahanna bldg. The water tower looks like a typical city water supply tower/tank as I did not see any trak stand pipes or hoses etc for steam tenders , which would be gone by the time the foto was taken most likely. I still will label my three wood tanks , but I think I will just use logo , easier to center vs lettering I think.
U.P.'s water tower at Hinkle Oregon has (if it still exists) a U.P. Shield on it. Earlier, it also had speed writing "Road of the Streamliners" in red lettering I believe. I've got another photo somewhere of it during the '50's, which I'll post if I can find it. In the meantime, here's one I found online: Cheers! Bob Gilmore
