4449 did indeed run from Portland, OR to Bend on October 20. The entire passenger and crew group stayed overnight in Bend, about 500 of us in several different motels. On Sunday we returned to Portland, and one of the favorite photo runby sites was chosen, that of the Willow Creek trestle near Madras, OR. The photos are one from that runby and one from the Plaza Santa Fe dome car catching the front end power, 4449 and part of the train exiting the Columbia river crossing bridge from the Oregon to the Washington side, where there is a unique wye. This was a great trip from which the revenue will assist the mandatory FRA 15 year inspection/overhaul of 4449 next year. Personally, I had a great time. If anyone is interested I will post more details.
Nice plume on that bridge runby! Looks like there was a car painted up for the Northern Pacific? Believe I read somewhere they'd done or were doing some work on the bridge at Wishram- East leg of the wye? Did you happen to notice anything?
I am jealous. I have always agreed with the saying that the Daylight is one of the most beautiful paint schemes. The run by scenery is fantastic and I have dreamed of riding in a dome car one day. Thanks for sharing. -Steve
Nice shots Fitz. the trestle shot is most certainly a Kodak moment ! Lets Hope 4449 can continue to turn steam into horsepower eh!
Ken, that car is the "Traveller's Rest" and was used as the crew car for this trip. The latest car restoration to Amtrak standards done by the great volunteers in Portland.
The folks working on "Traveller's Rest" have been using NPRHA resources and information in their restoration. I understand they made use of the NPRHA Color Drift Control Cards to get the colors as close as anyone can determine. I am excited to see this car's restoration continue.
