I've been looking around trying to find a suitable model to maybe kitbash some of these. In the 60's SP converted some of it's 40' steel boxcars to a 10' wide door. These cars were used in Lumber service and were distinguished by the diagonal yellow stripe across the 10' door. Although Athearn has released these cars in their RTR line they do not have the 10' door, (very noticable too). I have looked at the Accurail 40' plug door cars, but I don't know if the plug door is molded in. On the Accurail 50' car the doors are separate parts. Does anyone have any 40' plug door cars that could tell me if the doors are separate? I'm also looking for suggestions on how to model these cars if anyone has any.

    2slim,

The only Accurail 40' single doors that I have
are not SP and they do not say 'plug door'.

On these the door is part of the shell.

    Yep

    loco1999,
I was speaking more generic than specific, the 40' standard door cars might work, but I'd have to carve off the door hardware and replace it with the hardware for a 10' door. I was hoping the Accurail plug door had the doors separate but per your confirmation...nope! Hmmm I wonder if Details Associates might have done a kit to convert to a 10' door? Time for some research!

Have you got a link to a picture of the prototype ones?? I have been spending a lot of time lately looking at boxcars to kitbash.

Some of the 50'ers have a separate door.
Maybe there is a 40'er like that.

I was looking at single door cars
    not plug doors cars.

Those are all I've got hear to look at.
