I decided my Transition era loco stud was sadly lacking in my favourite road (the BRC), so in a fit of madness, I stripped 4 shells and made a start on rectifying the omission. For some unknown reason, the BLI undec SW7's windows are well and truly glued in, so I had to mask the glazing (inside and out). I find Tamiya masking tape is easily the best. I also did the side windows of the GP7, as I have ruined doors in the past trying to get the glazing out prior to a repaint. Jon
Here's the progress so far after the undercoat grey has been applied. We are looking at the body parts for a P2K GP7 and SW9/1200, and a BLI SW7, which has had the headlights corrected with DA parts. The P1K RS2 has had a RS1-style sunshade applied as well as a new chimney made from 2 seperate bits of aluminium pipe. Jon [ April 24, 2005, 01:14 PM: Message edited by: Jon Grant ]
'Who was that masked avenger?' I spent a few hours last night putting Masking tape over the areas I wanted to leave grey. Note that the expensive Tamiya masking tape was only used at the edges where the colours meet. I used the cheap stuff for the rest. I then sprayed the lot with matt black, before leaving in the airing cupboard overnight. Jon
This morning I stripped off the tape and here's what we've ended up with. GP7 RS2 - note the last vestage of GN paint SW7 and SW900 Detail are going to be added next, before I start lining out. Jon
They're coming along great, Jon. You don't see many models of BRC. I see you're using the same procedure I use when masking - use the Tamiya for the edges and the 'other' for the remaider. I look forward to seeing the end results. ps - I saw the Tamiya refills cheap (for the UK) somewhere - all I need to do is remember where!
This is my first chance to see someone using the Tamiya tape. Nobody around here has the stuff. It's always fun to see modeling of the non-major companies done! Wish there was more! Boxcab E50
Isn't the Tamia tape the same as the green tape florists use to wrap around the stems of cut flowers? It is usually about 1/4" wide. It seems very soft and stays put, yet will strip off fairly easy after a day or so too. Much better than masking tape does.
I got the decals onto the SW7 yesterday and started the weathering. There are still some detailling bits to go on, but it's getting there. Now, which one to do next? Jon
Here's a comparison between the early scheme and the 1964 livery, although some of the BRC locos continued to run in the old paintscheme into the 80's. I'll be doing the RS2 next. Watch this space. Jon [ April 24, 2005, 07:23 PM: Message edited by: Jon Grant ]
Alco's now weathered with detailling finished. I still have to find/buy the correct axle boxes but that can wait for now. Jon
You have done an excellent job of making the engine look as if it just came in off the road! Enough is just right!
Had not seen the Belt RR paint scheme for a while. Really nice kitbashing shells like that. A very, very nice job.
Isopropyl Alcohol, but I think it's closer to 100% than 92%. I paint it on with a brush, leave it a minute or so, and then brush the paint off with an old toothbrush or some paper kitchen roll. That way, I can control the amount of paint that comes off better than leaving it overnight. BTW, thanks for the favourable comments everyone, Jon
Jon, that is first class work by any standards The paint scheme is not one I am familiar with, but it really makes good looking locomotives.
